The good sis has a few amazing songs (Girl On Fire, If I Ain’t Got You, No One), and has been a part of some MAJOR bops (Empire State of Mind, My Boo, and Nobody [the DJ Khaled song, for those of you who don’t know get hip]). So why have most of her albums as a whole, especially the most recent few, and her foray into acting, flopped?

Talented but she became boring  

Alicia Keys’ brand is that of a multi-talented *R&B* star. Like women in pop, once you reach a certain age, people tend on move on to a younger models. Plus, it did not help that R&B died in the mainstream and her whole brand is the anti-thesis to pop music. Therefore, it’s unlikely that she could’ve crossed over successfully. 

 

Basically, she was the most prominent fad of the 00s R&B era. 

She doesn’t really reinvent herself enough to capture the publics attention like the other girls do. She also doesn’t try as hard with big red carpet appearances or participate in the celebrity game as much as the others either. She relies on big breakout singles to carry her. And she hasn’t had one for a long time.

She's been my Top 3 fave growing up. Went to her concert too. But she lost my interest with Girl On Fire (both song and album). And it went downhill from there. 

She has had a very successful career, nothing went wrong 

1. Her pursuit of a married man tainted her wholesome, good girl image off in a really bad way.

 

2. For the longest she was a purely R&B artist and didn't adapt to the music of the times (e.g. EDM, Trap, Indie Pop.... until she did Tropical House), so she would get pushed to the back on radio/digital campaigns, and RCA were prioritising their younger roster.

 

3. She never established a persona/great public appearance buzz (be it on the red carpet or being a great live performance artist), in the rising age of social media she shied away which in a way kind of hurt her, whereas other artists of the 2000s started to be more competitive to remain memorable and engaging with the public.

Honestly she lost a lot of her audience with the Swizz Beats fiasco. She was a wholesome artist that upwardly mobile women could relate to. That mess alienated her from them.

 

Along with the quality of her music declining greatly.

And she couldn't transition into a more serious mature sound either so she didn't even have the critics

That cheating scandal really hurt her career and has never recovered since then or seen the heights of her sales since then

Her vocal ability starkly declined and she was writing records that lived outside of her range and capability. Some of HERE was unbearable. I haven't listened to the last two albums.

i don't think anything went really wrong

she peaked in the early 00's when the R&B was highly mainstream, after 2001 she just gradually declined with each era(apart from her 2007 that was on par with the former one).

by 2011 her career was a decede old and was bound to decline, espeically when her genre was not mainstream anymore. she got a pretty big hit in 2012 but it did not sold her album( kinda like on the floor and dance again were not selling albums for jlo) and that's it really.....

Nothing really. She was extremely popular 2001-2007. She's just a pure R&B artist and by 2009, R&B wasn't as popular and its been that way ever since. She's still an icon.

This. Plus the fact that the music wasn't as good as it once was. 

 

The Swizz fiasco had little to do with it and was just coincidental with the decline.

The music was boring and filler 

 

Her last hit (and bop) was unthinkable 

Nothing went wrong. She has a niche fanbase now and i really enjoyed her last album tbh. Time Machine was it!

There was a shift with her after the second album where she wanted to get up from the piano and start crawling on it, trying to hit notes well outside her comfort zone. The public just could not abide the foolery.

This.  She didn’t evolve quick enough.  

And also, honestly…the whole Swizz Beatz/Mashonda thing didn’t help either. 
 

It’s still being brought up to this very day, even though Mashonda has long moved on.  
 

 

She didn't evolve, I'm not saying she should've jump into EDM or electropop but her sound stayed very samey and well R&B wasn't hot anymore so she got lost in the transition. She still had a decent career.
