Is Mya severally underrated?

Featured Replies

Is Mya a underrated artist and the most underrated of the Lady Marmalade four.
I was watching her set from Lovers & Friends, her voice sounds just as good if not better live and her dance moves are as soft as butter.
So is she underrated?

Yes she is.

She has such an amazing discography & it’s such a shame how forgotten she is.

She literally has everything; the vocals, the dancing, she’s beautiful & ageless, the music, live performances.

Fallen is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard, no lie.

I feel like she kinda gets her due. She comes right after the big 3 (Aaliyah, Brandy, Monica) in terms of 90's - early 00's r&b girls. She was never up there, but she was closer than any other girl and she's in that conversation. The fact that the music was mostly r&b - pop crossover unfortunately deprives her of a core r&b audience, hence Tamia, who was way less popular at the time, has ended up more remembered with 2 certified classics, whereas Mya is a step lower than that, but still.

Moodring was severely underrated, I'll say that. I still have no clue what happened there. Fallen should have been a top 20 hit, Step should have followed it, After The Rain / Things Come & Go up next. That was an ALBUM. I think again the fact that she was poppier didn't help because by 2003, you couldn't get a hit if urban radio wasn't BLASTING your music and Mya had kind of abandoned urban radio during her second album

YES! Her music got better after she went independent!!

"T.K.O." & "Smoove Jones" are some of the best R&B albums of the 10's.

Her videography is amazing as well (the Damage video, Got My Own, Ready for Whatever... :jonny: )

I don’t agree with this. She was very successful her first 3 albums & has enough recognize hits to tour etc..

I think the reason why she’s simply not remembered is due to entering too late. Brandy, Monica & Aaliyah debut 4/3 years earlier.

Its the same problem Mandy Moore had their was already 3 other girls who had the lane.

But Mya still had a great career.

She is still out there performing, singing, dancing and releasing independent albums. Love her brand and marketing. One of my faves!!

No. :rip: The girl only had like 3 noteworthy hits and the last of them was a collab with 3 other artists, all of whom had bigger careers than her. She was basically the Dev of the early 2000s.

I’m talking more in terms of talent, the music is great too how can you hear Fallen and not love it.
She can perform her ass off too, her voice is great and her dancing is so smooth.

Yes but I just think she came at an odd time. She wasn’t a teenager when she debuted, but she debuted right in the teen era. So, she they pushed her as a teen act but she had sexually explicit and mature songs. So she never quite fit.

The answer is yes. She had bops and moves and even had some hits but it ended faster for her than it should have.

She was very successful but not quite on the level of the other 3. She was on the tier right below them, which is still cool

Um no. Mya had 6 top 20 hits and 2 platinum albums. The Dev of that era would be Monifah or something

She was the 4th on the same tier not a different row.

 Brandy 1994

 Aaliyah 1993

Monica 1995

 Mya 1998

Moodring is neither certified nor eligible for platinum.

Mya was never on the same tier as Brandy, Aaliyah and Monica. Mya's biggest album has sold 1.4m, whereas Brandy's biggest is at 4.5m and Aaliyah's is at 3.5m. She was closer to Monica's (weak) album sales, but Monica was huge on the singles chart and had 9 top 10 hits vs Mya's 3. Those 3 were on a different level and that's ok.

Her label really should have capitalized on her success after Case of the Ex and Lady Marmalade but they failed to do that with moodring. I don't know what happened with her label but they really screwed her over.

That isn’t that much of a huge difference & i said she was at the bottom of the list especially since she was close to Monica sales.

Mya had 6 top 20 hits Is just as good as 9 top 10s.

It definitely is at this point! I think you’re underestimating her

As an artist, no. She was only really around for 5 years & cut her commercial career short by going independent

As a performer yes she is. One of the best ever.

It's not

like at all

I've always loved Mya and thought she was underrated.  I still can't believe that Free flopped so hard.  It feels so fun and fresh, even to this day. :jonny5:

She played the local gay club in my city about 5 years ago and I wept afterwards because she deserves better than to perform for 42 coked out twinks :jonny4:
