How did Olivia become big immediately?

Featured Replies

Drivers License debuted at #1 while the debut songs from previous Disney girls like Selena Gomez barely made the hot 100 and you could argue that selena was way more popular when she first released music.

how did olivia become successful right away?

Still dont know how. She was a nobody on a thursday and on a friday she was everywhere. Her fans say “ because she had fans from the hsm series” but so did Selena.

Selena is just not as talented :cm:

ATRL underestimates the power of going TikTok viral, plus just how big streaming has gotten & how it works. Selena had neither of that back in her day.

Lol well thats another story

Social media let’s word of mouth spread much faster than back in the day.  I’m not surprised the elderly on here still can’t comprehend that.  Most on here still think it’s 2012.

Jack Harlow just about broke the Spotify record strictly because his song went viral on tik tok a week before.

Tik Tok and social media spread the drama like wildfire so everyone checked out the song and it happened to be good so it stuck around

Used Taylor for clout + Swifties + Tik Tok.

Sadly, she’s still a faceless artist that nobody outside of Twitter and Gen Z knows. :giraffe:

She didn’t up until G4U and the copyright gate and the Grammys this year

Tiktok. I remember the week Driver’s license dropped. It was actually insane how much traction  it gain. I remember comments on that day praising the song. And suddenly it was all over Tiktok and twitter. I think she just found the right audience at the right time. She had a buzz on Tiktok before but that song went Crazy online in a few days

Olivia already had massive support from Gen Z and TikTok, it was only inevitable for "Driver's License" to go #1.

Did you even check any social media platforms that week? Everyone was talking about her. It was insane!

Boring, overplayed Selena shade.

Good question considering Selena, Miley, and Demi didn’t have huge chart peaks and monster hits immediately despite them being massive names. Maybe the fact that Olivia wasn’t known as a major Disney girl benefited her song’s success — the GP kinda wrote off the other Disney pop girls in the beginning because they thought of them as that.

Olivia also came out the gates with relationship drama which helped make the song relatable and sell it.

She had an extremely dedicated loyal niche fanbase that got her the initial exposure and day #1 debut, and from then it was just one of those one in a million, once in a generation perfect storm things where the narrative of this song being her heartbreak about the guy she had been dating on her same TV show struck a huge chord with young girls, and it just became this mini cultural phenomenon.

The reason it happened so fast is because of the way social media works and how some thing can become really well-known really quickly without the need for traditional media exposure. If this was something that could be easily replicated you would see a ton more artists having out of nowhere success like this, but it’s not. In fact any educated stan should be aware of how many girls flop all the time despite huge payola and PR and forced memes. Even the ones that are successful often take away longer, look at Billie, she spent years as a niche underground artist slowly bubbling up.

Her subsequent streams, sales, tour numbers, everything really, has attested to the fact that that initial success was very much real. You can fake social media numbers, you can’t really fake the kind of career she’s had. At the end of the day her tour is sold out for a reason, her next one will be too.

It’s not just shade for the sake of shade, I’m just giving my honest opinion which is based in reality

While Olivia is out here writing relatable songs about heartbreak for her debut, what did Selena have for her music debut? Some generic bubblegum pop with mumbly vocals that could have been sung by literally anyone

Exactly. Back in the day people had to actually purchase the song, which was a different level of commitment. It’s much easier to check out a song that you’ve been hearing all about it on social media for free.

Wrong, noone becomes so massive just because another artist supports and the gp clearly knows who she is if her album is one the biggest debuts ever

She filled a generational void. But the oldies here don't get it.

She’s talented and TikTok allowed her to spread like wildfire in early 2021, but Olivia’s well-documented love for Taylor was a key aspect to growing her fanbase. Swifties bought into the idea that one of their own had made it and rallied around her. For the first few months of her career, Olivia mentioned Taylor at virtually every opportunity to the point where it doesn’t seem completely out of the question to come to the conclusion that she “used” Swift. I don’t believe she intentionally set out to do so as she was known to be a life-long fan to those who followed her career before DL, but it all worked out well for her.

I dont know, I was watching an interview of hers, and i dont see it for her long term sorry. As to why she got so big, there is a large void that has yet to be fully filled in the pop shere. She was the only pop girl releasing catchy relatable songs last year, so she kept getting hits. Her songs appealed to the Taylor demographic which is a huge crowd. Doja did her thing though, and Dua's 2020's album gave her levitating in 2021, but Olivia was new and multicultural, so she stood out.  There really arent a lot of MPG's for gen Z. Ari is a family woman, Billie isnt realising mainstream songs, Dua is inconsistent, Doja is big but she doesnt release those huge hits like the 2010 MPG's used to. So her success is not surprising, same reason why cardi got so big in 2018,-low supply caused increased demand.
