I genuinely think she just meant her age. She really cycles the albums around her ages, it feels like it's important to her.ย

  • Did Lorde work with the Paul Institute/Jai Paul while she was in London last year? ย  For those that don't know Jai Paul. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/apr/14/jai-paul-coachella

The way like a week ago I was about to post in here that I thought the album may not be coming out this year oh Lorde we love you

Perhaps I'm the last person to notice, but Lorde now appears to be represented by Global Music Rights (GMR) for her music publishing.

ย

BMI-songview-search-2025-04-16.png

ย

https://globalmusicrights.com/artist/1423598

ย

She used to be with ASCAP and I was just checking ASCAP and BMI sites to see if there were any new Lorde songs registered and noticed the change. On the APRA AMOCS NZ site, it seems to list UNIVERSAL/MCA MUSIC PUBLISHING PTY LTD, so I'm not sure how that fits in with the GMR affiliation.

ย

Edit for people searching for credits/new songs.

ย

Jim-e Stack is affiliated with BMI, so you can search the BMI repertoire:

https://repertoire.bmi.com/

ย

Writer/Composer: stack

Performer: lorde

ย

Songs where Dev Hynes is the co-writer might be more difficult to find, as he is listed by BMI as having no affiliation.

He is sometimes credited as Dev Hynes or Devon Hynes.

I'm not sure if this belongs in any of the song or Virgin album discussions, since this twitter thread is one interpretation, and Lorde can speak for herself about her gender identity and might have more to say in some of her other songs or interviews.

ย

https://x.com/braedenlorde/status/1918640861870424367

ย

TLDR: Lorde appears to have stopped taking a medication that might have been prescribed for acne, but can also be used as an anti-androgen (testosterone blocker). When she writes about feeling more masculine, she is feeling the affects of increased testosterone, which she describes as being "someone more like myself", the feeling of living with a testosterone level that might be natural for her.

ย

Of course no-one has to show a medical reason for the way they are feeling.

ย

Edit: please see the triple j interview for a different perspective.

She talks about going off her contraceptive pill as being a major trigger for hormonal changes.

It's such a pleasure watching her grow up as a woman and as an artist. VIRGIN is so amazing. Her discography truly is incredible. I used to dislike Solar Power and think it was a stain but even though it's nowhere near the perfection her other 3 albums are, it's very solid!

Lorde went to watch "John Proctor is the Villain" on Broadway.

ย

She appears to be back in the US and went to see the play. In this Tony-Award nominated play by Kimberly Belflower, starring Sadie Sink, Lorde's "Green Light" plays a very important role.

https://x.com/carovidsz/status/1943849188137095559

ย

Some background on the play and the role of "Green Light" can be found here:

https://playbill.com/article/how-kimberly-belflower-got-lorde-to-sign-off-on-using-green-light-in-john-proctor-is-the-villain

ย

Spoiler

For Belflower, as for generations of American high schoolers, The Crucible was always interpreted through the lens of John Proctor as a hero who is unfairly maligned by Abigail Williams.

Spoiler

Spurred by Woody Allen calling #MeToo a witch hunt, Belflower began researching the real history behind the Salem Witch Trials, which led to her re-reading The Crucible. She saw it through new eyes, realized how disturbing it was that John, a middle-aged man, cheated on his wife with a teenage girl, and then threatened Abigail when she dared to speak out.

Spoiler

"I heard myself say out loud to my dad, 'It's crazy, because it really feels like John Proctor is the villain.'"

Quote

In the final scene of John Proctor, Shelby and her friend Raelyn (Amalia Yoo) lead their class in a dance set to "Green Light" by Lorde. And yes, Belflower successfully got Lorde to sign off on the usageโ€”by writing a heartfelt letter explaining why "Green Light" was so important to her, starting with when that song first came out and Belflower listened to it on repeat for two hours.

Some connections between songs.

Lorde_-_Melodrama.png

ย "The Lourve" from Melodrama:

ย ย ย  Half of my wardrobe is on your bedroom floor
ย ย  Use our eyes, throw our hands overboard

ย ย

NQK8XYi.jpg

ย "Stoned at the Nail Salon" from Solar Power:

ย ย ย ย  Got a memory of waitin' in your bed wearin' only my earrings

ย The song appears to have been written quite early in the song-writing for Solar Power:

ย

Lorde began writing the fourth track, "Stoned at the Nail Salon", six months after finishing the Melodrama World Tour, and recorded it in Antonoff's home studio. A contemplative folk ballad, the song was borne out of insecure feelings of fading into irrelevance and becoming out of touch with pop culture."[53]

Lorde confirmed these songs were connected in one of her email newsletters and said "those two lines you mentioned were actually set in the same bedroom."

Quote

SCWWTS Matthew sent a lovely thoughtful email pointing out some of the linguistic connections between songs โ€” lines like 'half of my wardrobe is on your bedroom floor' and 'got a memory of waiting in your bed wearing only my earrings' โ€” he asked "Are these bonds/connections/evolutions between your songs โ€” now spanning three albums/eras and almost a decade โ€” intentionally crafted, or is it more of a spiritual, subconscious thing?" Great question Matthew, they're almost always intentional. I really love building in those little links and connections between past eras, and I try to be really careful and intentional with how I use language in songs. For example, there's a moment on Solar Power I rework the 'every perfect summer' line from Liability โ€” which invokes the original source while giving it new meaning for a new life stage. And those two lines you mentioned were actually set in the same bedroom. You clever thing.

Her email comments can be checked here:
https://lordeemailarchive.tumblr.com/

ย Looking at "The Lourve" she calls her lover a crush and sings:

ย ย ย ย  Our thing progresses, I call and you come through
ย ย ย  Blow all my friendships to sit in hell with you
ย ย ย  But we're the greatest, they'll hang us in the Louvre
ย ย ย  Down the back, but who cares? Still the Louvre

This suggests that she is talking about someone new, she calls the relationship our thing and in another line says he is not my type and implies that her friends might not approve and while she likens it to a work of art, there is suggestion that it would be hidden down the back for some reason.

Spoiler

The reason that it would be would be hidden "down the back", is that people would not have approved of the 17-year age difference between her and her new crush, Justin Warren a Universal music executive she first met when she was much younger.

In "Stoned at the Nail Salon" she is singing about an established relationship, although she is foreseeing a time when they divide up the papers, she says she is still crazy about him.

ย ย ย  Got a memory of waiting in your bed wearing only my earrings
ย ย ย  We'd go dancing all over the landmines under our town
ย ย ย  But the sun has to rise
ย ย ย  When it does, we'll divide up the papers
ย ย ย  Two former hell-raisers
ย ย ย  I'm still crazy for you, babe

ย There is really only one person that can mean. In her Document Journal interview in May 2025, she talked about an end of a seven-year relationship, which we know ended in 2023.

https://www.documentjournal.com/2025/05/the-magic-lives-close-to-the-edge-lorde-and-artist-martine-syms-on-the-beauty-of-the-self/

Subtract seven years from 2023 and that takes us back to 2016 when she was writing "The Lourve" and other songs for Melodrama, so everything lines up. Solar Power songs "Stoned at the Nail Salon" and "The Man with the Axe" are referring to the same person.

So are several songs in Virgin, including "What was That" and "David". There is also a couple of references to him on "If She Could See Me Now", although those songs are written from a post breakup perspective.

ย On "The Man with the Axe" she sings:

ย ย  I should've known when your favourite record was the same as my father's, You'd take me down

In Mid 2017 - she did a WTF podcast with Marc Maron, episode 844, where she talked about being inspired by guitar music and a lot of artists from the classic rock/folk rock era. Quite a lot of the things she talked about in that interview from 2027 turned up in Solar Power or were an influence on Solar Power.
http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-844-lorde

Perhaps it isn't a stretch to suggest that the sound of Solar Power was significantly influenced by her much older partner and his favourite records. Maybe even the blonde hair we saw for a while was something he liked, but most of time it didn't looked right on her. So it does make sense when she referred to some aspects of the Solar Power era and said "actually, I don't think this is me."

This doesn't mean everything from that era isn't her, without the Solar Power era there would be no Virgin album and her mid 2023 festival look and concert setlists were great, almost the right balance between Solar Power and her earlier eras.

ย hungary-14-august-2023-lorde-live-at-sziget-festival-in-budapest-andrea-ripamonti-alamy-2RJWK8F.jpg

ย

Of course we now know she was going through a difficult breakup and an eating disorder around the time of those 2023 shows.

From "David" she sings:

ย ย  And once I could sing again, I swore I'd never let myself sing again for you...

I'm pretty sure we will never see a live performance of "The Man with the Axe" and I'm wondering how many Solar Power songs we will get on her upcoming tour. Perhaps she might skip "Stoned at the Nail Salon" too. Even "The Lourve" could be missing from the setlist, although a lot of fans might complain about that one.

Solar Power will always hit different during summerย  I also love how the vinyl keeps surprising me with vocals I don't hear on streaming.

does anyone else realize that she disappeared again?ย :biblio:

You can see from the link above she purchased the house for NZ $2.84 million in August 2015 when she would have been 18 years old.

From my understanding, she didn't move in right away, perhaps not until early 2016.

ย

This means that her apartment in West Village is probably her main home now.

This might be good news if she is going to be spending most of her time close to the producers and studios she needs to make more music.
