January 26, 20242 yr comment_25203266 This might be a reach but I find it interesting that all of Gaga's lead singles tell us something about where's she at in terms of her relationship with the public: Just Dance: It's pretty self-explanatory, she wanted to (be a part of) bringing dance music to the mainstream, and she was arguably the biggest cause of this shift towards dance-pop music in the late 00's. Bad Romance: I think this is as much about a romantic relationship as it is about her relationship with fame: she recognizes the danger ahead, but still craves it. Born This Way: Pretty obviously related and aimed at her young lgbt fanbase. Applause: She lives for the Applause, enough said. Perfect Illusion: She claimed it's about social media and I don't think that's entirely untrue, it might be about the para-social relationship she formed with her fans which she discovered to be an illusion throughout ARTPOP era. Stupid Love: She wants the audience's stupid love, it sort of like a parallel to Bad Romance, through the lens of Gaga post-Perfect Illusion: she knows it's stupid, doesn't take it as seriously, but she still craves it. I wonder if her next lead will also fit this mold.
