Lady Gaga

This is part 1 of the Lady Gaga discussion.

If BTW were to come out right now, it would receive the praise and accolades it has always deserved.

Gaga has always been a victim of bandwagoning when it comes to critical praise. She's "too pop" for reviewers to laude, but too talented for them to outright pan her. She falls in this weird middle ground where her albums end up in the 60s and 70s on Metacritic. On top of that, she doesn't have a dedicated PR team that pushes a "perfect, god, icon, amazing" narrative, nor a team that threatens to blacklist publications if they dare to give her a negative review. For the most part, she lets the music speak for itself, and the music she makes just doesn't fall in line with what the reviewers think is "amazing" even when it is. I'm not sure how she can overcome this, tbh. I mean, the soundtrack for ASIB was the perfect album for reviewers to get behind and praise, yet it ended up with a 78 (not bad) simply because it's Gaga.

With Chromatica being her highest score to date, maybe her next album could land in the 80s, but I'm not sure what exactly she'd need to do for that to occur. Then again, maybe there's no point in caring.

You're right that she's been unfairly judged for most of her career, so i believe being undeniable is the only way to shut up the naysayers and i think she hasn't been quite yet.

i just want something new, even if its a BOTS'd collab. it always causes discussion on the rest of the forum too, like stan wars etc.

Anyways charlie puths new album is kinda collapse, and since he wants the gays as fans (God only knows why) i would like Gaga and Puth a collab. their we dont talk anymore' moment would re-set culutre

I agree, but I also felt like ASIB was that undeniable moment. Then again, it was the beginning of her career comeback so I guess it makes sense they weren't on board just yet. It seems like things are going up so maybe her next album can be the moment when the critics "get it".

BTW is literally THE album that separates her from the rest. Literally no other "pop star" could have or can ever make an album quite like it. It's not even about individual fan opinion since even the critics (now) agree that it's some of her best work. Just take a look at and go through all the 10th anniversary retrospective reviews and you can see how they talk about how much of an artistic swing it is and how vast it is in scope and ambition. Like @Bang Up said, if released today it would easily land in the high 80s. It was ahead of its time and she put something out so different and amazing at such a young age, and with no features(!). It is absolutely a masterpiece and arguably, her magnum opus, her most important record and central to her legacy. Let's not.

People like to forget Gaga released BTW in 2011, THREE YEARS into her career during a time when she was the biggest popstar since Michael Jackson. It was insane for her to go that route. :jonny: And she suffered for it. NONE of her peers had the balls to do that.

BTW is definitely central to her beliefs as a person and an advocate for LGBTQIA+ community and not only. But although it's a very daring and risky record, i thought it just didn't reach it full potential, which doesn't mean it wasn't good.

This is so true. Even me as a Stan already, I was a bit taken back by what BTW was offering. Dark. 80s. No compromission. Of course, now we can say that she did the exact same thing with Artpop. Those are two of her albums where she clearly tried to break the mold and push the limits as far as she could (those are not great albums but they are great evolutions) for a mainstream artist. To do that, so early on, at her peak. Her mind.

Those albums are not legendary at all :deadbanana2:

They're overrated only on gay forums and certain online publications, and they don't make those people legends, especially when it comes to Lorde and Lana.

it takes also time to an album to reach a real legendary status and becoming a cult classic.

'Nevermind' from Nirvana, 'Like a Prayer', 'Ray of Light', 'Thriller', 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill', 'Back to Black', 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness', 'Jagged little Pill', ecc, these are real legendary albums and they also have at least a very well known single from them, thing that the albums you mention don't.

The topic is not about whether Melodrama, NFR, Lemonade are masterpiece or not

Replace it with whatever album you want.

I'm saying that it is perfect time for Gaga to reach legendary status by releasing masterpiece.

I fully believe, though, that Gaga would not be where she is today if she hadn't taken that giant leap. That album ended up being instrumental to the lives of an entire queer generation and is what solidified her lifelong fanbase. Had she continued with what people expected or wanted, she would not have survived ARTPOP or any other backlash. It was the unwavering support of her fans that kept her career going during the ARTPOP debacle.

I wish she goes risky like BTW again.

The Fame Monster shits on most “masterpiece” albums anyway.

what full potential are you talking about hun? Her best records are in that album (MTN/TEOG), her most politically charged record is in there (BTW/Americano), one of her most controversial (Judas), experimental songs (HML/GH/BM), solo written song (Y&I), all while being great music with amazing and intense roll out and performances/tour/media, getting retrospectice aclaim, etc. What more do you want? nnnn

btw is timeless risky classic, that will never replicated ever again by a female commercial artist.

it was just once in a lifetime album :gaygacat5:

the way its getting 1M+ streams it deserves sits so right with me

Chromatica was almost that moment for her. Which is why it's so unfortunate how she decided to handle it despite circumstances being admittedly horrid. Another reason why Chromatica is better than Joanne is that Chromatica is a more successful (and better, tehe) release despite horrible circumstances meanwhile Joanne had the super bowl to prop it up and still floundered.

Back to back spillage  :jonny5:

But it all worked out in the end and the risk was totally worth it imo. It separated her from the pack and showed everyone why she has a unique place in pop culture, cemented her core fanbase that will largely stick with her forever, received a lot of retrospective acclaim and is having a moment 11 years later. Her philanthropic arm is also named after it so in a way it will live on forever unless BTWF gets closed down for tax fraud :eli:

You're also completely erasing the context in which the two albums were released though – Joanne after ARTPOP and Chromatica after ASIB :rip: Anything that was following up ARTPOP was bound to bear the brunt of it. There was also a stark difference in her public perception between then and now and she didn't have the streaming services support then that she has now (in fact, her relationship with Spotify was very strained atp as we all know with Tr*y C*rter being involved and MR not spending a day on TTH etc) and how hard she had to work to rehabilitate her image again but ok :toofunny3:

Joanne laid the foundation for her to complete the transition and stage the comeback she needed with ASIB.

Chromatica i think apart from SL and some small stuff is a fine album, but i feel it was just a warm up for what could be her masterpiece. Joanne was damage control for ARTPOP, it's a solid album and did what it needed to do at that time.
