Gaga has always been a victim of bandwagoning when it comes to critical praise. She's "too pop" for reviewers to laude, but too talented for them to outright pan her. She falls in this weird middle ground where her albums end up in the 60s and 70s on Metacritic. On top of that, she doesn't have a dedicated PR team that pushes a "perfect, god, icon, amazing" narrative, nor a team that threatens to blacklist publications if they dare to give her a negative review. For the most part, she lets the music speak for itself, and the music she makes just doesn't fall in line with what the reviewers think is "amazing" even when it is. I'm not sure how she can overcome this, tbh. I mean, the soundtrack for ASIB was the perfect album for reviewers to get behind and praise, yet it ended up with a 78 (not bad) simply because it's Gaga.

 

With Chromatica being her highest score to date, maybe her next album could land in the 80s, but I'm not sure what exactly she'd need to do for that to occur. Then again, maybe there's no point in caring.

BTW is literally THE album that separates her from the rest. Literally no other "pop star" could have or can ever make an album quite like it. It's not even about individual fan opinion since even the critics (now) agree that it's some of her best work. Just take a look at and go through all the 10th anniversary retrospective reviews and you can see how they talk about how much of an artistic swing it is and how vast it is in scope and ambition. Like @Bang Up said, if released today it would easily land in the high 80s. It was ahead of its time and she put something out so different and amazing at such a young age, and with no features(!). It is absolutely a masterpiece and arguably, her magnum opus, her most important record and central to her legacy. Let's not.

BTW truly felt like a pop event that nobody managed to replicate in terms of hype and anticipation, the album was excellent, totally different from what people were releasing in that period in terms of imagine, sound, lyrics and production.

Once in a lifetime album and pop event truly.

I'm glad it's getting the love it deserves on Spotify.

All Godga albums are good. Problem is most of them end up being dragged down by a couple of unnecessary tracks. Even ARTPOP and Bombanne could've been great with a few cuts.

 

Can her team push Y&I and TEOG more on Spotify? Both songs deserve at least 300k streams daily.

All of this is very true. I think if we’re honest too her last three albums feel really weirdly evenly matched, sans Chromatica the clear critical winner. they all did 3.5-5m CSPS, all had a hit, all had amazing peaks, but ultimately all had poor longevity.

This is tea. Although Chromatica didn't have the lows ARTPOP and Joanne did. Methinks LG7 will be an album full of polished and concise bops.

All of this. Chromatica was a very good step in the right direction in that it was well-crafted as an album and wasn't messy, which has always been the biggest criticism levied at her. And Joanne did what it needed to do at that time even if it's nowhere near her best.

Tbf, TF/M and BTW were both released before poptimism was a thing. The fact that she got the critical backing she did was an outlier if anything. And critics typically don't care about super traditional country or AC so ASIB not smashing with critics isn't that crazy.

 

I think basically every critic realizes that she's "due" for their backing and that her past work didn't quite get the praise it deserved, but also know the artistic highs she's capable of and won't just go and praise whatever thing she releases next. When she does something undeniable that utilizes her talents to their fullest extent, they will come out in full force for her. 

 

I still think that a progressive pop album with a unique concept and a pairing album film (done with a major filmaker obvi) would be a slam dunk critically and launch her into legend status. And it'd combine the separate threads of her career into one project.
