In what universe is Perfect Illusion the most "basic" song on Joanne or a safe choice for a lead single in 2016?

Not holding my breath on the Emmy thing, this year is simply not in her favour when it comes to awards, also an Emmy would be great but same old argument, I'd rather her to win with a tv show eventually.

PI its a GREAT song but as a LEAD?   should have been released DIC instead (at least it will pull The Cure numbers) because it fits to so many hits from 2016 (one dance, cheap thrills, let me love you, TIWYCF etc)

It’s the weakest song lyrically, vocally and production wise on the album. Whoever chose it as the lead single really stitched her up. Thank god for the super bowl/MR because that era would be totally forgotten otherwise

I will say (since everyone is discussing it) that I actually adored Stupid Love when it first came out, but now I can’t stand to listen to it. I’m not sure if that’s because it’s aging poorly, or because it reminds me of the beginning of the pandemic when my mental health went to s**t

Half the people in here aren’t able to exist unless they say daily that Gaga is a flop and makes shitty music. 
 

PI is probably the less GP-radio friendly song from the album actually, especially when it comes to vocals and production, maybe if they would have kept the original demo production of Kevin Parker it could have worked.

 

SL wasn't that bad at first listens but it's a song that you get tired easily, there were better choices. However without 2 months in advance of leak the first days  performance on Spotify would have been better for sure, same for Youtube, by the time of release we were tired of it and the majority of people online who follow music and give the first views already listened to it, there was no hype or curiosity, and a crappy video filmed with an iphone didn't help at all. That is another case of Interscope handling a release super bad with doing the biggest mistakes possible for a comeback single.

For me it's aging poorly, I remember loving the song as well when it leaked, then I was tired of it by time of release.

Because it IS.  She’s been in the industry for over 20 years as solo artist.  What were the numbers for Perfect Illusion, back when Legend wasn’t even 10 years in yet?  And for SL, when she was just about 1 decade in?  What Beyoncé is doing (regardless of the quality of the song) is an achievement.  Stop being immature and learn to celebrate the success of others.  Yes, we know the Hive sucks, but Beyoncé doesn’t really have anything to do with that.

Sine from Above is such a cool concept. Elton John feels like a god singing above the Chromatica clouds. Omnipresent, ethereal, bigger than life. It makes sense to have a gay deity as the spiritual leader of the album/planet. Too bad sonically it's the worst song of her career.
