Which songs do you consider to be among Beys best gems, as in which songs did u basically ignore or dislike in the beginning but now belong to ur favs of the project?

 

I think personally, these are the true gems in her discography:

 

- Suga Mama: Wasnt a fav when Bday came out, but now, its one of those songs that aged tremendously well. It has a timeless feel to it (unlike a lot of songs on Bday) and deserves a viral moment akin to Diva atm.

 

- Dance For You: I remember when 4 came out, I oftentimes skipped Dance For You because I felt that 6 minutes were too excessive lol the older I get, the more I hear the perfection that Dance For You represents. Its so cheeky, sensual and a masterclass on building momentum in a song. Dance For You should be considered the bar when it comes to making 6minute long songs that constantly build up. I honestly feel that there wouldnt be Virgos Groove if it wasnt for Dance For You.

 

- Grown Woman: Maybe its due to its restricted access in the beginning, but Grown Woman has become one of my favs off the BEYONCE era. It simply never ages and still sounds super fresh today.

 

- Love Drought: Such a marvellous track full of wonderful rhetorical figures, a continous expanding water motif which is further emphasized through the progression of the instrumentalization. Chefs Kiss and a song that truly flourishes the more time passes imho.

 

- Move: Move is one of those tracks that I inititially didnt appreciate and considered one of the weak points of Renaissance. Other songs just felt more instant. Then came the tour, and something shifted in my perception of the song. These days, its my second most listened song and I perceive as a true show stopper on Rennie. 

 

- Sweet-Honey-Buckin: Similar to Move, I initially favored other tracks on CC and perceived SHB as clunky. Fast forward to now, I oftentimes truly gravitate towards it. It's become one of my favs of the project simply because I always find a new detail that intrigues me.

4, on paper, should be higher but the lyrics are about as elementary as you can get for an R&B album. Horrible rollout of singles too. Like her team listened to the entirety of 4 and said "you know how we're going to introduce an R&B album in the middle of an EDM craze? Release a familiar-sounding EDM song as the lead single". Like hello? Great vocals though

The 4 slander is literal insanity to me lol. It's her BEST album next to Renaissance IMO. Depending on what side of the bed I wake up on, it's either or.

 

As Original Hive (from DC's first single to now), it's "the" album where ALL the Beyonce's (plural) show up. Bop'once, ballad-once, throwback-once, vocal-once, empowerment-once, commercial-once, art-not-charts-yonce, all the...Yonce's!

 

They're neck and neck IMO. Rennie is perfection and is a near-flaw-free execution of its concept. 4 bests Rennie in the one that regard it fuses more genres and includes ballads. But it really is a tie. 

 

Tastes are, of course, subjective. But I'll forever be perplexed at how some stans will point to Beyonce's "least" Beyonce-sounding albums as her "best". IMO, an album ought to serve artistic expression and evolution, while maintaining a sonic throughline that drives home what the artist is about and typically sounds lilke. 

 

By that measure, I will never get how the largely mid-tempo/gritty/lo-fi self-titled gets pointed to as "best" or how the super slow and reflective Lemonade gets touted as such either. Both amazing standalone efforts, but not "definitive" Beyonce albums sonically. 

 

IMO, there's a lot of conflating love for an ERA with the quality of the ALBUM at its center. Self-titled and Lemonade **eras** were iconic af (arguably her best and most culturally impactful), but a lot of the material (outside of the hits) are not hugely essential to her discography.

 

Sidebar: I high-key love that fave is so layered to the extent that discussions of her best album tend to generate a range of responses. Speaks to her cross-generational appeal and enduring stardom. It's a huge flex.

It clearly has some really great songs on it, but the project itself is not one that I ever go back to in its entirety.

I agree to some extent, I don't think her first 3 albums are anywhere among her best. Although Lemonade and CC offered a lot of nuance with the themes portrayed and were to some degrees a peak in artistry & storytelling…they just lack the replay-ability factor that Renaissance, 4 and Self Titled have which is what has made those albums in particular fan favourites (hell 4 is even Bey's fave).
 

CC especially is just such a bloated album even though it has some career highlights. I think she did the best that could be done with a genre like country & it definitely made a statement.

I would put ST after Renaissance and 4 in front of B'Day or equal to it but other than that I don't see much wrong with Chris' ranking.

It very much lacks Beyoncé the curator in it. It's old-Beyoncé's peak, but it lacks Beyoncé taking from here and there, sampling stuff, layering vocals and putting pieces together. You can still tell some of the songs came as they are, I Was Here doesn't even have her credited as a composer. She still does her magic, like in the I Care bridge vocalizing a guitar riff or how she changes her singing style for every section of Dance for You, but she'd take things way further now.
