Two very different artists, one of them is probably the greatest ever and the other is pretty with hits.

Writing credits are out and Jay is all over that album. I always wonder if he goes into writing sessions. In my mind she rolls over to him in bed and goes "Jay I have this song but I think it needs fixing. Here lemme play it from my phone" then he adds his critiques, throws in some hooks, and then he gets credit. 

Regardless, no matter whose propped up against Bey. They will NEVER give us a Cowboy Carter like Bey. And that's on PERIOD!

Whether we like it or not, Jay is just an insanneee lyricist and I do think him for the amazing quips he's written for Bey

CIL will never be dethroned of its iconic classic status, but REQUIEM is a more technically impressive song and honestly might be the greatest thing she's crafted in her career. Sonically, vocally, lyrically... As an album opener, it also serves as a stronger introduction and first chapter of a record than CIL does.

 

But perhaps this is also a redundant point to harp on because one would only hope that an artist, after 7 albums, has matured enough to craft a more masterful album opener than their debut record. For CIL to still be held in such high regard even 20 years later is a testament to her singular talent and virtuoso intellect.

American Requiem is a recital. It's exquisite. I totally agree.

Also Spirituality/religion serving as the literary and lyrical theme of American Requiem (intro) all the way through Daughter (Climax) to end with Amen (closer)

 

Genius. I genuinely don't think you can compare CC to any other albums of hers aside from Lemonade.
