A song needs more than technical prowess to be good.  And sure, Be Alive and Spirit aren't bad at all, they just feel comparatively lifeless and uninspired to what she can do.

 

Her future Bond song is what's gonna snag her the Oscar, anyway.

Throw whatever semantics you want on top of  it but you're not going to make Be Alive anything more than a repetitive, lyrically bare mantra. It is what she intended it to be.

 

Scales do not equate to an interesting song and it certainly didn't make Spirit anything more than a cute mid-tempo ballad, which is why everyone and their auntie slept on it.

I did not see anyone gagging over Be Alive, and the only people I saw gagging over Spirit were vocalist youtubers, who's whole point is to respond to technically exciting vocal performances. Music is a bit more complex than a song being vocally complex. I'm not going to argue with you (glad you love both songs), but I actually thought you were joking when you made the "thot anthems" comment and mine in return was tongue and cheek... but turns out you were being serious
