The first clip of Wicked is being praised on Twitter and there’s a leak of the audio and she sounds great :clap3:

The Little Mermaid trailer looks pretty bad :rip: I’m so happy that director didn’t direct Wicked (he almost did at one point)

I thought I was the only one who thought it sucked, the movie is clearly gonna flop, and yeah we dodged a bullet with that director

Today/yesterday at CinemaCon they showed a clip with unfinished CGI and some scenes of the film, you can hear defying gravity, some people are saying they heard popular but I’m not sure, you can also listen to that one scene when Elphaba says she has nothing to wear but Glinda points at her hat, and you can also hear Ariana saying the lines “You’re beautiful” and “That’s what makes me so nice”

thanks :heart2:

Ari’s glinda talking voice is spot on which is good

I’m actually pretty disappointed that Cynthia does the final DG note with a little variation. I always preferred Idina’s original straight held note than the adlibs all the other Elphabas started doing more recently.

wicked gonna be the defining movie musical of this decade at least :giraffe: coming for Oscar’s AND a billion dollar gross

Agree about the first half, not sure about the second tho, Oscars for costume design and hair and makeup are very possible, I can only see it grossing 1B between the two movies not each one individually, and even then that’s a huge stretch, a +300M gross for each movie would be cute

I also noticed that DG sounded different but I’m not a fan of the play so I wasn’t sure what was it, hopefully it’s still a good performance of it

i'm ngl if she legit makes us wait until 2026 to tour, she needs to abridge the positions contribution to the set significantly. like i'm sorry. there are a few songs i want to hear to live, but i need AG7/the hits at this point babe + all the songs you've been ignoring (*cough* IN MY HEAD *cough*) in the setlist.

$300 million for each movie would for sure mean a significant loss for Universal, those movies need to make at least $800 million combined to turn ~some profit.

Only looking at the set design, the wardrobe and how much time is going to be needed for post production (i.e. VFX), Universal is putting MONEY on this movie, we better secure our tickets for our girlie. Can't wait, personally (although I selfishly want a new album before Thanksgiving 2024).

does anyone one what would happen with the 2nd film if the first one is significantly panned and flops?

imdb currently lists the budgets for each at 145m (part 1) and 165m (part 2). high-demand thanksgiving releases (typically comic book/adventure movies e.g. the hunger games, black panther, harry potter, etc) typically bring in between 100-150m opening weekend alone. the movies will also probably have long theatrical runs instead of getting dumped on streaming. they’ll be fine lmao

Those amounts, plus over $100 million each for advertising would for sure require like $400 million in box office alone for each movie to break even in the theatrical window. Looking at live action musicals that made as much in the past few years: A Star Is Born and The Greatest Showman, while you have major flops like Cats, In The Heights and West Side Story. It's truly a toss up, but they seem to have a lot of faith in it, since they approved that much money and two movies instead of one.

To your point, though, Wicked is very much a successful.mp3 property and it's a proven box office smash on stage, so now it just has to prove itself on the big screen, and it doesn't have to go face to face against two family friendly films, one which happens to be part of the biggest saga in the world.

I don't think it's possible for the first one to flop so terriblly that the second won't be released in theaters. Wicked and Ariana have huge fanbases that should avoid that, at least on opening weekend. It's the legs that would be worrisome, but holiday season has been very kind to family friendly movies since Star Wars and Jumanji populated them.

cats was an objectively poorly-made adaptation of a property that was already not liked by audiences/a punchline; west side story and in the heights were both the “limited theatrical runs then dumped on streaming” in question; and while greatest showman and ASIB did succeed, they did so without the context of being an established $3b+ IP lol. truthfully there has not been a recent movie musical that stands up as a fair comp to wicked when you consider both cultural context and demand; the closest would be les mis which comfortably pulled over 400 without casting the biggest pop star on the planet. with big release box office numbers already returning to and, in some instances, eclipsing what they were pre-covid, it’s safe to say nobody needs to be panicking about buying multiple tickets to make sure these movies recoup
