My Showa era singer-songwriters idea was approved but I haven't had the time to finalize everything, and I'd like the rate regulars to participate in it too, not just j-pop fans, so I'm aiming to start it after the current wave of rates is (almost) done, probably the last week of August.

Can we aim for after Labor Day?

  • This is ******* me up       Yeah and it was specifically in the context of "albums that I can't believe I sat myself through but rates were still fun!"

@Ace Reject, @supaspaz, since we are talking about new ideas, how about mini-rates? They could have 20-30 songs max, have a much shorter submission period (2-3 weeks max) and people could go berserk with their theme (something like "Rate my top 20-30 favorite songs of all time", "ATRL, rate and decide: better album between X and Y"). They could help new ATRLers try the host's shoes and see if they can handle the whole process, all without the burden of longer reveals!

Maybe we could allow only 10 active mini-rates and 6-8 active rates per round? After all, having too many rates at once could be counterproductive to all of them, so a queue and mod approval would be still needed

Not opposed to the concept of a mini rate but also haven't seen any suggestions for it that pique any interest.

I kinda think the concept of ranking somebody's favorite songs is better suited for YTT or Games?

& with regards to the hosts talk, I've been trying to soft launch a co-hosting role for a bit. I love hosting but the workload is huge and I worry about me hogging too many ideas. I'd be more than happy to act as assistant to anybody who wants to launch a rate of their own.

Some of the concepts for mini rates I've seen are:

  • Songs made around a feeling/emotion (Revenge, Infidelity, etc)

  • Songs with similar names (Sorry, I'm Sorry, Forgive Me, Apologize, etc)

  • Songs made about certain Holidays (Halloween, Xmas, Mother's Day, etc)

  • Producer based rates (William Orbit, Max Martin, Jack Antonoff, etc)

  • EPs and Mixtapes with a shorter track listing.

Honestly if we were ever to do an mini rate. Let's go big and rate all the songs that have won multiple rates in ATRL history. This ensures that the songs are ATRL faves and the suspense of finding which of the songs get another trophy on their (Kelly) mantle.

LOVE the idea of mini rates. LOVE the fact that you espouse ideas! Love that they are PRACTICAL and PRODUCTIVE. Imagine that!

I think if we were lucky to have 6-8 rates and 2-3 mini rates going on at the same time, that would be blissful.

Oh and @Graves if I had a co-host... just imagine.mp3.

I am entirely in favor of shorter rates! Always have been. Bring back the days when we pitted three albums against each other or several artists with a handful of singles each. There’s no rule that dictates a rate needs to be long.

Co-hosting sounds like a blast, especially for rival-themed rates! We could have two hosts that drag and cackle at each other all the time, the kiis would be IMMENSE

And this is the exact kind of smarmy, mocking and pretentious attitude (you can tag me and @LesFleur btw!) that was called out, yet you wonder why it's the same regulars in here and no one else wants anything to do with you.

Producer based rates (Jack Antonoff)

First rate ever where the winning song has an overall average score of 1, this is the finest glucose for my OJAH'S cells jonny

The potential this kind of format has is quite infinite if we think about it, especially if we consider the amount of themes (like @Indie Go Mind said) we could explore in each one of them. Besides, they could even work as a sort of "test" to bigger rates that belong more to a niche category too, non-English international music being the biggest example! Creativity can legit go berserk with them, thus encouraging more and more members to join in and/or host!

3-4 active mini rates along with 6-8 active rates sounds like a great comprimise for me, thank you both for the consideration btw! hug

One I've long wanted is a rate with all the songs the girls have done AFTER they've become mothers. (Actual mothers, not the Stan kind.) Ties into your holiday theme!

And have we ever done an Original Christmas songs rate? I can't remember at this point...

The averages would be crazy

The winner would end up with 5.20 or something

You get more flies with honey, babe.

@Angelshark expound a bit. What are the albums you're considering for your "Middle of the Road" series? Let's make sure they haven't been rated before. Also, who would you consider an "International Bjork?" I'm curious! gayorkcat4

A 10 and a 9 stand before us. Let's be serious.mp3

Also, in full transparency (not everything has to go down in the DMs.mp3), @PenguinTim is cooking up something special! Do not want him to be accused of jumping the line when his rate starts!

Thank you! See, I'm not that scary. I'm thinking the second would be good for you to start after Labor Day - we'll add it to the queue. Workshopping is fun!

Another idea - a rate of all the Video of the Year winners, based on the quality of the videos ONLY. Can't believe we've never done it! Open to anyone picking that idea up and running with it. (Could even throw in the BET VOTY winners as well...)

EP vs EP rate could be fun, and the multiple winners too.

Like Charli and Rina battling it out for who really ruled 2017??!?! Count me IN.

@Raphy still want your idea beloved!
