After revisiting some of them recently, I was hoping for some kind of rate, but I believe that both debuts and sophomore albums were done at some point, and then it gets uneven with the third albums and onward, so if it's just a bunch of songs from them, then I'm down for that, too.

I like the idea of the 00s indie rate - those girls raised me!

 

But there's also a camp aspect of ranking those random women the UK hyped up for one or two eras and then dropped like a rock like yes let's give Pixie Lott her 8s.

Now that you mention it I think I have a vague recollection of the latter. 1 Thing the enduring hit that you are!

If they weren't too niche of an idea I also think Daughters of Control (Forever Your Girl vs. Jody Watley vs. The Right Stuff) and Ladies of Jazz (Billie/Dinah/Ella/Julie/Nina/Peggy/Sarah) would be fun but I fear the turnout would be three or four oldheads at most

i will take on a joanna newsom triple album but who else are we talking about? the people who i actually think of as her contemporaries are the 00s gay guys tbh (early sufjan and owen pallet, i would love this rate), i'm curious about her competitors unless yr reaching across different styles, more alt than indie (goldfrapp supernature, robyn s/t, bat for lashes?)

 

there's also the logistics issue that JN has all her stuff taken off of spotify, it's annoying tho cos this is much more the rate that i'd actually do, i'm not going anywhere near amy mccdonald or kate nash

I've already made the playlist. A lot you're not thinking of - some are from the Upper States (and frequently collaborate with Canadians), some started their careers as child stars before leading acclaimed bands, some... eventually became go-to pop songwriters. All were around from 00-09! And no cis men involved!

A trashy little throwback rate to 2010 - just for fun. We can call it the McDonald's of pop or something. I'm cognizant that Ace would like less discography rates and more versus… so

Well, once the UOG rate makes its way to the 2010s, two of these women will be there...

 

... but does anyone want to do a rate with the real trash of the century? Like, reality stars might be TOO low for the UOG series (barring Heidi of course!) I'm talking the Tila Tequilas and Danielle Staubs of the world.

Anyway, as I was saying… a 2010 rate featuring those four women and their albums, features… and maybe some of the lower tier pop girls of the era, for a song or two: your Seleners, Mileys, Xtina (hehe).

 

Rates are games after all, and as much as I love learning new music I also think we should cut loose and do some dumb, generic ones sometimes. Think about it.

I do feel like there's value in having some 'pop bibles' type of rates to maybe get people more actively participating again. Like a Blackout/TFM/1989 situation where people are passionate about the material and maybe don't have to (re)listen to as much.
