Yep same! I remember my seventh grade social studies teacher telling us America had the "strongest constitution ever." Girl please. What gives me hope is that as hyper-individualistic as Americans are, we're also stubborn as hell. We've found creative ways to resist in the past, and I have no doubt we'll do it again. Even failed movements during the Progressive Era in the early 20th century set us up for successes down the line. These things take time -- we just can't see the forest for the trees yet -- but eventually we will. It's not going to be an easy fight, but it's a righteous one.

I agree. History doesn't repeat but it rhymes, and this era reads as a second Gilded Age. Zinn's Robber Barons and Rebels chapter is a solid overview of that era. We have tech robber barons, land grabs (data centers/neo-colonialism vs. railroad, Dawes Act, etc.), fears around new technology (AI vs. rail, improvements in farming, etc.), mass corruption by the ruling class (along with the banks and government). There's also the dehumanizing of immigrants (ICE/anti-immigration today vs. Chinese Exclusion Act, etc.), the fragmentation of the working class, yellow journalism, and rising wealth inequality. It's been this way for a while now -- going back to Reagan -- Trump and his cronies just don't care to hide it. My hope is that -- like the Gilded Age -- we begin to see a rise in labor movements with coordinated strikes and strong unions. The difference today is mass surveillance and a militarized police force makes organizing far more difficult than it once was.

Where does the left go from here now that every major social media app is controlled by the billionaires? TikTok felt like the last true holdout. I don't see Bluesky or Upscrolled or any other competitor becoming viable anytime soon -- and if it does, the tech oligarchs will buy them out or lobby them into extinction. I have plenty of criticism with how social media was used by the left in 2020, but at least then we were able to mobilize. Information was far more accessible and these companies at least feigned interest in controlling disinformation. Like obviously the algorithm was already getting nuked on these apps by then but my feed wasn't at all fractured like it is now. Not that I have faith in any possible 2028 Democratic candidate, but I don't see how they can win when you can't cut through the noise of these horrid platforms. We honestly need to turn back to analog media -- zines and newspapers and flyers. What other choice do we have?

This is how I felt about Bernie endorsing Rebecca Cooke. She attended centrist circlejerk WelcomeFest last year and is backed by the Blue Dog PAC. She's called for an end to aid for Israel... but has taken DMFI money. She doesn't seem to stand for anything. The flip-flopping and fence-sitting these candidates are doing is unreal, and it's beyond frustrating that the country's leading progressive figures are endorsing them.
