sure why not? it's not exactly a vocally demanding song. the lyrics are about a boy. the piano chords aren't very difficult either (and even if she messes up the backing band covers up the mistake).

The backing band of 19 year old boys? The band at the time were an amateur garage band. Avril was the musical director and performed her ass off. You wouldn't even hear Taylor's vocals over the guitars - nevermind even attempting a fast based tempo Piano ballad and playing it herself.
