They probably worked something out. Given the fact that Columbia didn't know who they were signing (expecting MPG numbers based on a phase in 2019, ignoring the rest of her career as an alternative act) and that Halsey publicly talked **** about them for not allowing her to release music

I mean, most of the time the artist receives a huge advance when they sign. If she already left after one (unsuccessful) album, wouldn't that mean she has to pay that all back?

Could be wrong but I don't think that would be good for her.

She could very well have set up an imprint that distributes through Columbia, though. Halsey won't be the first artist to publicly talk **** about her label, Charli did that a lot during the XCX World/mixtape/Charli/HIFN eras but it worked out in the end...
