Is Anthropology problematic?

Featured Replies

I am a hobbyist of human migrations and genetics, I noticed it has a bad rep in left-wing circles, due to connation it has with White Supremacy and Nazism.

So what do you think?

Anthropology of the 19th century which is intertwined with eugenics, maybe rip

Contemporary anthropology has been imbued with a lot of other fields and theories to make sense of various aspects of the world, such as (auto)ethnography and social sciences which are deeply related with gender theories.

I don't really have words to express the disappointment this brings to me, but do your thing.

I'm so stupid I thought this was going to discuss the brand Anthropologie.

Well a lot of it has never been so ethical but it's not only anthropology and it's probably fine now.

anthropology used to engage in questionable tactics, but that was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially when it was practiced by hacks who called themselves scientists without having actual credentials.

these days, rigorous training, ethical methodologies, and thorough field practices are part of very anthropologist's graduate training. so the answer to your question is no.

Knowledge of personal biases and cultural relativism is one of the biggest parts of graduate training in anthropology nowadays, so it's certainly come a long way. The way that positivism and scientific thought have inherent qualities that lend themselves to perversion by fascists certainly is a conversation that I wish more were willing to have, tho

no idea, but i don't shop there. my friend is obsessed with their candles though.

It is, many anthropologists just use, intrude on and exploit their communities to create problems based on western views. For example, no indigenous group here has ever complained about problems like "cultural appropriation", but rather about shelter, food and respect for their culture. It is delicate to make their problems "white" and to adopt a "superior" posture, assuming that you have a lens that explores and understands human nature better than everyone else. Like the white savior complex but on an intellectual level.

A lot of it is very "the victors write the history" but still has its valid place and is important

Antrophologhy is giving unemployed, so yes it is problematic (to those who decides to pursue a degree in it)
