Are girl groups lowkey coming back?

Featured Replies

Last year and now I've been seeing more girl groups gaining traction on streaming and social media more than I have seen in a hot minute. Kpop obviously has had many popular girl groups thriving for a while but there's seems to be more global interest lately imo. Do you agree? Are you here for a girl group resurgence? Who are your favorites? I'll post a few

  • They never went away. None of these groups have outsold TWICE and Girls' Generation. All 4 videos in the op are either direct collaborations with kpop labels or with creatives who make kpop hits. None

  • Oh, BP is definitely bigger and more global than both Fifth Harmony and Little Mix. I would even go so far as to say that even aespa is more global than Little Mix.

Girl... no na and GIRLSET don't even have a single song with over 20M streams on Spotify. They might get a couple of semi-viral tweets on Stan Twitter but for now, that's all

They didn't really go away but we haven't had any dominate like Destiny's Child, The Pussycat Dolls, Fifth Harmony, and Little Mix. It's too soon to say that they are back though.

id argue blackpink did

Hopefully, I'm tired of seeing ageing mpgs shuffle back and forth on stage while charging 1000 dollars for a concert.

BLACKPINK and TWICE have been selling out stadiums all over the world for a long time, while also selling millions of albums and having impressive streaming numbers for a girl group in recent times. KATSEYE is only getting more attention right now because they release English music and are receiving a heavy push from Scooter Braun, using tactics similar to those of BTS and other HYBE groups.

girl they tour stadiums and arenas. This isn't a hot take

Yeah but all four songs in the OP are kind of similar? I want something fresh from a girlband.

Stop with all the retro-nostalgia sounds

FLO pave the way for this new wave of girl groups nobody was checking for groups until FLO showed it's profitable.

the success of the KPop Demon Hunters movie and Golden labels and radio stations could be more wiling to support girl groups again.also Katseye having a break though shows it could make a comeback as well.

Performing at 1 specific stadium in 1 city does not make you a stadium act.

I've never heard of FLO, but I highly doubt they've brought in as much money as Girls' Generation, BlackPink, Aespa, IVE or TWICE skull

I just Googled them and they can't even keep up with those groups in Western success skull

They easily are and they've outpeaked them despite LM having much more globally-friendly music. LM and Fifth Harmony both pale in comparison to girl groups like NJZ, Aespa, IVE, TWICE, SNSD and BP.

Fifth Harmony never managed to establish themselves fully, so I agree.

But Little mix have sold an estimated 75M record sales, and had many more global hits than all of these groups combined. You are really underestimating Little Mix.

Its also hard to compare Kpop acts with Western acts in general

They sure have the biggest fan base but none of their songs have been as long lasting on the charts as Gabriela for example

Where do these numbers come from? Chartmasters only lists them at 16M records and 20M CSPC. I have checked multiple sources and everywhere says they've sold less than 5M albums in the UK. Are we really supposed to believe they sold that many records globally when they've never been relevant outside Europe? And what global hits are we even talking about?

They have sold 3.67M albums, 130k physical singles and 12M digital singles. That's only 15.8M records sold. Aespa are at 11.24M records (albums + physical singles) excluding digital single sales.

As far as moving 75M record units, that's not a lot either. Between Spotify, YTM, Melon and Genie alone, Aespa are above 14B streams. That's 93M units before adding in sales or streaming platforms that don't show numbers.
