I think you're taking it too literally. Beyoncé didn't have to "drag" them because she showed them through sheer chart performance. They were doubting her but she still came out on top.

It's a ripple effect. Everyone will drag the show (which, in some regards, is deserved), but it's the amalgamation of a lot.

Music, as both a product and as an industry, has lost a lot of its premium.

The barrier to entry is on the floor: no artist development, virality over long-term honing of craft, and an overwhelming amount of music being released DAILY. I actually like the latter, but it definitely dilutes the premium of the overall machine.

Add to that shorter songs, fewer videos, and changing consumption platforms and patterns.

Then...on top of that, you have artists big and small, trying to get their Beyoncé on and doing their best to be mysterious by basically avoiding the promotional trail altogether.

In one regard, I get it. In an era of hyper-accessibility, where most money comes from the live circuit anyway, it's arguably one way to retain a bit of celebrity sheen and keep the focus on the real money maker: touring. Basically, Bey's decade-long motif: you wanna see me? You have to pay for it on tour.

The problem is that everyone isn't Beyonce and they absolutely could and should be visible and actively basking in all that comes with the platform of a VMAs, AMAs, Billboard Awards etc.

With them not doing that, the end result is middle-tier shows like the VMAs suffering. The Grammys, for now, will be ok because every industry has to be defined by some kind of apex goal or institution. And, in music, that is the Grammys. But even they aren't safe. Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha kinda don't give a f**k, and most of "their" artists aren't championed in that space, so the long-term prospects for all shows/ceremonies look a lil bleek at worst and subject to being completely reworked at best.

I'm glad Beyonce pays VMAs dust—I know she doesn't have videos but she can still attend for kii. I've noticed they are slowly erasing her from promos and emphasize that overhyped autotuned nose performance with blood, Britney overhyped snake performance, and Madonna kissing two teenagers. This time they only showed Beyoncés baby bump moment for half a second.
