I've felt this way about CUFF IT since my first listen. Nothing about my opinion of it is running with what others have said.

But anyway, this is kind of a silly rebuttal, saying that I lack the taste level to discern what makes it different from the rest when I literally started this topic by saying:

Just because it is more commercially potent does not make it more basic or generic than others... There's songs on Renaissance with more generic writing and/or production than Cuff It but lack its success

Its a bit of a silly debate but since its already started, it isn't hard to understand everyone's perspective.

The word I prefer, especially with B, is what someone said above or on the last page: challenging. Cuff it does have a relatively 'easy' or traditional song structure with very catchy melodies. Most other songs on Renaissance are very experimental or complex in how they are constructed or in the sounds they have. I personally think BMS tops that list for me in terms of a simple core house beat that the song is constructed around.

But I also understand that saying 'generic' or 'basic' for B, especially on Renaissance, feels insulting and instinctively wrong! That is because when B taps into more friendly melodies and song constructions, her work is never 'derivative' - which is the feeling with pop music and most other stars. She always elevates the music and has such complex elements that no one but her can do - especially vocally, in harmonies and so on. Also, her production is always one notch above and feels richer, more authentic, more nuanced (all of what it is!) - which is why hearing 'generic' feels insulting. And it never feels like she is dumbing it down to make it 'friendly' - hell Cuff it's chorus literally has "F*CK" in it - the opposite of the feeling generic or people friendly generates. She is just making her best art.

Which is why this feels a bit silly to me, yea sure, Heated, Cuff it (and BMS for me) are 'generic' in one sense (with exceptions WITHIN the songs itself) compared to the rest of the album, but B elevates it and so calling it that feels wrong! In fact she's so good at it and we are always craving those moments that get us HOOKED and are ear candy, have those catchy, more groovy and vibey elements, (bodyguard, Tyrant, etc) that calling it generic feels so insulting to how much she elevates them and enriches them - the talentry is off the charts! Literally no one else could do it even if their lives depended on it

I appreciate this well-balanced take on the subject, but I think we've gotten very far from where I started it.

What I said was actually a compliment to Beyoncé and CUFF IT, it's just that someone truncated my post while quoting so the only thing appearing was me saying it was the most generic and basic song on the album without the context of mentioning it to outline how Beyoncé dipped her toe in an established trend but came out of it with something more authentic and unique than anyone else.

I understand people's reactions to the adjectives I used, but I still think logically, unless the album is one-note, which RENAISSANCE certainly is not, we can always deem a song "most generic" just as we can have one that is "most experimental" even on a record that is mostly generic.

With CUFF IT however, it's not even the fact that it's not as experimental as others, but that it factually existed in a post-Say So pop landscape where disco-inspired tracks did well, and in 2022 I felt like this was a bit played out, a bit late. It especially was late in 2024 when Sabrina Carpenter did one too, but because of this I found it to be the more "basic" song on the album. And still, as I said originally, Beyoncé managed to do it with her own unique take and give it a feeling of authenticity no others were able to do, Say So included. This was, ultimately, a compliment lol.

It's really crazy it's been ten years ago since she was last at the Met Gala, and how we hoped / expected for several years later that she'd attend...

I think we saw the leaked "Catholicism" look she was supposed to wear...and I'm glad she didn't attend if that was what she was wearing. I think that was the last time we really did expect her to attend as if it were a given.

Some people I know wear "the less commercial the better" schtick as a whole personality, and I think it's wack.

A good song is simply a good song.

Cuff It is easily one of the best things she has done in years (I legit feel it's in her top 5), and just because it's catchy, infectious, and ear-candy does not make it...lesser.

Transparently, yes, in a post-Levatating world, there's no denying that there are many basic songs out with a similar soundscape. BUT, what I've always loved about Bey is that she will even flip the basic into a layered affair that pulls on all of her "things" (singing, sing-rapping, and production switch-ups). She did the same on BMS, too.

It's what stops even her GPpleasing music from ever veering into Bruno/Lizzo territory (and they, too, have some great songs lol). Let's not be faux avant-garde with it.

So then you agree with what I said, because this is 100% what I was talking about. It's just that someone decided to remove the actual point of my comment to just respond to the notion that I felt the song was "the most generic" on the album.

Personally, I don't need a song to be experimental to be "good."

But if a track has established stylistic qualities of other popular songs out there, or is in the same lane as other hits, then I'm going to notice. Hearing CUFF IT after I'M THAT GIRL, COZY and ALIEN SUPERSTAR, it was pretty clear that it was the Halo of the album.
