Why is Kelis Was Here so impactful?

Featured Replies

The Boundary Pusher aka Kelis released Kelis Was Here and I believe it is withstood the test of time. I swear Kelis Was Here is heard throughout the industry. I mean the space-age instrumentals (Weekend, Appreciate Me, Trilogy), experimental production on What That Right There (Deconstructed R&B), basis of the masterpieces such as poignant Circus and revolutionary Aww Shxt/ Bo$$y. It is clear, Kelis is still here living in pop culture, and the impact of this album is definitely felt.

ANTI, Blackout, and Lemonade definitely took inspiration from the ideas that come from this album.

I mean Kelis saw the future with this album, like 18 tracks for an album. A soothesayer, she saw the change that would come. A prophet.

For this bop alone!! She was competing with Beyonce, Xtina, Rihanna, Nelly, Fergie PCD and still served excellence

the fact that "Lil Star" went top 3 in the UK too :jonnycat:

They always treated her good there

Her worst album and still better than some of the girls' best. The way she EXPOSED the music industry on Circus :gaycatney4:

Taylor's mum had the tea!

I agree. All her other albums are better

Flesh Tone remains her magnum opus

the way Rihanna came in and tried to steal her whole bag, look and all in 2007

such a shame that history has pushed that aside and pretending like good girl gone bad was some kind of gamechanger

after all not everybody can the first girl to scream on the track

I know that phrase is used a lot and mostly ironically, but Kelis truly was ahead of her time.

And I still believe that Ariana was trying to have her Tasty with Sweetener

I meannnnn

The world wasn't ready for alternative black girl r&b in the late 90s-early 00s. Here she was with her big hair, loud fashion, screamin' on her songs and she has The Neptunes producing all her tracks. I feel like during this time, you had to be either neo soul or pop r&b and she didn't fit in either of those (hence why she probably went and released Milkshake which is a megabop btw).

God I love Kelis, what a talent.

I was obsessed with circus a few years ago. She's a great rapstress too. :clap3:
