Shortly after she sent the song to Gotti (a Jay-Z associate) so he could record his verse, Beyoncé and Jay-Z released '03 Bonnie & Clyde, which used the same concept (2pac sample) and hook. Toni later said she was hurt by the situation and felt the song had essentially been taken from her. A definite pop/R&B bible. Sequels are tacky though and very rarely live up to the originals. Should've Known Better already served as a mature reflection on Rhythm Nation's legacy rather than an attempt to recreate it. Janet revisited themes of social injustice, war, discrimination and political division while acknowledging that many of the issues she was singing about back in 1989 remain painfully relevant today.
