Sometimes it's just the visuals, other times it's the music too.

this is only really a throwback in the visual sense i think - the song is a standard 80s vibe - i think this is a better fit for 60s

I really adore the aesthetic Katy had for NRO. Wish all of Smile had that retro 60s style. It was so unique at the time, and felt like a fresh progression for her!   I'd go with 60s / 70s. I

Can you imagine being a gay boy in the 60's and seeing this slay OMG

Give me 60s psychedelic rock & soul, 70s disco, 80s goth & 90s grunge (plus Britney)

:gaycat2:

From then on... I'd rather go even further back in time.

I'd go with 60s / 70s. I like the aesthetics of those eras the most.

Sis i been thinkin about starting a website-blog indexing all the throwbacks of the pop singers.

Your suggestion for 60s is really helpful  and all the suggestions here too
i honestly feel like artists today love throwbacks stylistically-visual wise but sonic wise they are afraid to really delve in the genres of those decades :giraffe:
u see all of them with visuals all over the decades but musically all the sounds are stuck in the 70s-80s palette mostly.  So boring :gaycat6:

Me? I dont like any of these decades. Theyre boring to me :gaycat4: My favorite throwback is the medieval one :ryan3:

I personally love the 80s throwbacks even if they are a bit tired by now, when it's done right it HITS >>>

a couple that spring to mind straight away are the throwbacks from the first ariana album which are very 50s/early 60s doowop coded

another is the very old school latin arrangements of mariachi music on camila's (much underrated!) familia album, idk exactly when i'd place songs like this tho maybe you'd know better?

Thanks sisters for your comments.

I honestly wonder when they will stop with the throwbacks and if the other half of 2025 will be the same :rip:
Doja cat looks like is coming with a 80s album
Gaga released mayhem
Miley new album feels very Throwback 70s-80s
Sabrina talked about new disco songs in her new record
Chappel is 4 coming with more  80s influenced songs.

Enough is enough :rogue: Its time to start an anti-throwback campaign and i need the support of yll :gaycat2:

But I love the disco revival. I didn't care that much for that late 2010s sound before don't start now and say so were released. Thank you dua and doja. :eli:

love the late 90's early 00's for like vengaboys, basshunter-y type music whatever the genre is. love the good vibes bounciness of it all.

60s and 70s for me. The peak of Pop, R&B/Soul, Funk and Rock. :alexz2:

2000s are #1 bc of my millennial/nostalgic bias

80s are #2 bc yea. Iconic. Legendary. The blueprint for pop music.

The 90s are #3 for ballads, house music, punk rock, hip hop and R&B. Such a full on fusion decade. It is better than the 80s depending on my mood, I just think it's a decade that's all too versatile to decide where it belongs in my rankings (mainstream wise).

There was a sixties revival in the very late 80's/ early 90's which I found refreshing, and it felt like a real shift because for the first time in a decade, women were free from perms and curly hair, which immediately prior to that had got very silly and over the top.

But I also like when La Roux re-

interpreted the early to mid 80's here:

However, I also like an actual late 70's/ early 80's lo-fi aesthetic when music videos were still a new format and labels were still hesitant about budgets:

It feels like nobody knows how to make good, low budget aesthetic choices/ editing anymore and they simply squander it instead with uninspired decision making and instead passing off as a "Visualiser".

I mean, at least pan the camera up and down, film full body shots and dance/ serve looks to camera. Make the most of the background.

Like this:

.. And not like this (for example):

In this case it would have been so much easier to simply lip-sync the lyrics and keep changing up the takes/ camera angles to cover the full duration of the song:

I did like it when Lana and Ariana brought back a 60's aesthetic a decade or so ago:

oh i came in to post some Eartha Kitt and Judy Garland songs :deadbanana:
