Personally Yes

Normally I don't make these threads but, I had a thought, Benson needs a drastic rebrand if he wants to stand out and stay in this industry. Currently, his music sounds way too much like Shawn, Ed, Nial and every post music competition male artist. I will say Shawn is way more enjoyable. I hate the redneck mullet look (Thank You Kurtis Connor), the guitar toting wanderer/ heartthrob aesthetic and the tired made from a musical competition producer acoustic guitar/rock instrumental. Like, I know that sound has made him popular, and he has a lot of success with that sound. However, I believe he is going to get trapped by his brand into creating the same music (already transitioning to country music like Shawn) for two more albums instead of experimenting. Like it or not, experimentation is essential for maintaining a loyal fanbase, because once fans get bored, they will leave for the new shiny boytoy.

Like, why are male pop sensations from this era always just an acoustic guitar with some whatever is popular at the moment. Where did the pre-established concept for an artist go? Literally in five years, I don't think people are going to remember what a Benson Boone is. He sounds too much like everybody else. He could go the folk route to folktronica to hard rock to psychedelic to PnB to math-rock to Space-funk. Honestly, I would like to see him try to give these kinds of instrumental.

for a challenge he could go full experimental.

Spoiler

If he went full Surf rock for his next album (released during the summer) that would be such a slay. He is vocally talented, has charisma and has some stage presence, all he needs is something to separate himself from the rest of his contemporaries. Also, some vocals seem to strain his voice, so I recommend sticking to the low to mid registers.

So ATRL do you think Mr. Boone needs a rebrand?

I'm sorry, I don't know what his brand is other than backflips to his one song.

80s camp counselor with stache in videos and Freddie Mercury on stage.

Yes, watered down hairy styleless who is already a watered down version of 80s male pop stars is tired.

He already rebranded from "cute guy with piano" to Freddie Mercury wannabe

Right? I was like "rebrand from what? He's had one hit song" :deadbanana4:

Benson Boone doesn't play the acoustic guitar. Not to say he can't I don't if he can but he doesn't forefront that in his music. He mainly plays the piano. And outside of being white men that make rock adjacent pop music benson has nothing really in common with shawn, ed, and Niall. He's more theatrical and they're more singer-songwriters. Brand wise benson is doing freddie mercury and Bruce Springsteen cosplay whereas Shawn, ed, and Niall are more akin to John Mayer (Shawn especially)

He hasn't been on the scene long enough to need to re-brand yet.

We really do miss the ARTIST side of male pop stars today

michael jackson

elton john

freddie mercury

david bowie

I mean these are mainly cigarettes but they were SO interesting, so varied, so EXCITING musically and on stage

the concept of a male pop star has been dead for a while, we are just served the same **** again and again nowadays

There is nothing unique or interesting about him, Beautiful Things was a faceless hit that could've been sung by anyone.

I listen to the radio a lot so benson Boone tales up more space in my mind than he should really.

In terms of brand, I don't think he actually has a consistent one musically? maybe he does on his album (you will not get me to find this out) but of the four singles I've heard, they're all quite different (syrup rock, light chamberpop, bad stomp and holler and this new synthpop thing).

he might be best having some sort of signature sound and sticking to it for a bit cos I don't really have a firm idea of what he wants to be, beautiful things comes closest to this but that's just because it's so inescapable.

I kinda doubt that will be mid 10s indie dream pop (tho maybe slow it down is trending in that direction? that's his best song for me) but it's quite a nostalgic thing to think about those jay som and Matty records now anyway, I feel better for being reminded of them

There's nothing interesting about him artistically. He's also cosplaying as this liberating male pop star persona when we all know he is a conservative. He just doesn't stick.

All he needs is a Yoda like James Ford.

His voice for big anthemic songs. he just needs more compelling production that stands out.
