Wasn't the "hide" feature technically a form of self moderation? I've used it a lot when I've had second thoughts about a post breaking a rule or veering too off-topic.

 

Wouldn't that actually make the mods' job easier? How does one actually "abuse" the feature?

Making threads they thought would eat and then hiding them.

 

Making posts that are warnable then hiding them.

Totes, but in each of those examples, the posts/threads not being viewable or cluttering/spamming the site is surely a benefit? Or personal attacks being hidden so as not to cause further issue/offence that's stamped there, forever offending. 
 

Panned posts still have the user retain any downvotes they received when public.
 

Mods still have the ability to view hidden replies & dish warnings as necessary, to my knowledge? 

Idg how it's not a net good that a user self moderates/corrects, but I suppose we don't have a full grasp as the mods, of just how much the feature was being used to obfuscate.

"Edit" is more for additional thoughts, corrections or minor changes, to me. 
 

"Hide" is when you get into it, then decide actually, you don't want to get into it - & saves everyone the trouble. I mean, unless you want 2 pages of posts saying the same thing, a bunch of reports over the same thing, then having to wait for or take time out from a mod, to come just lock a thread, to achieve the same thing.

Now how do I hide my posts on this page? After 24mins have passed I'm a new person & I find them annoying, I don't want Ryan to feel

I don't know what to tell ya. A certain messy diva was making too many rage-baiting threads and then hiding it when they backfired and now we all have to pay. That's just the way it is

If someone doesn't want to use Twitter, that's their prerogative, but this kind of cynical co-option of progressive rhetoric for liberal means just ends up in what are reactionary and meaningless actions. (Linking to twitter also proliferated how it has due to most forums explicitly asking you not copy over more than 30%~ of an article to avoid copyright issues. If it's suddenly okay to just copy pay-walled content or provide links to circumvent paywalls, which is often what Twitter did, then such would be actionable.)

 

The elephant in the room is that a subset of liberals are still resentful that Twitter is largely a unique space for political conversation and that such conversation had not been in Democrats' favor from any direction, despite that what's shared on Twitter via commentary and opinion or breaking news is often relevant as news. 

 

I'm sympathetic to people feeling powerless and thus get why "I'm not gonna use Twitter/X anymore" feels like something tangible they can personally do. I place no ill or malicious intent on anyone feeling this way. But it's awkward to see people who made clear written defenses for Biden or Harris supporting the Palestinian genocide pivot and try some now weird "hmm funny to see LEFTISTS supporting a NAZI WEBSITE!" as some gotcha to people linking to twitter in the Civics section. A phenomenon that even @Bloo has commented on (x) (x).

imagine being that annoying that mods have to create or disable features based around you. to this day i've never seen anyone else claim they had to be put in timeout in between posts

People have abused it to basically start arguments in threads, hide a post, and leave a mess many times

Then they come in here and complain

Don't you remember the orange report banner era here? I remember seeing that banner under literally most natural thing in the world like someone would say "I love drinking water" and there would be a report banner under it. Also those multiple report for one post too and some did for the kills. If I remember correctly I think mods warn not to report a post that had already been reported.
