i love promo post release but all these month-long gimmicks prerelease do close to nothing for the song's popularity with the GP as seen with how so many recent smashes were surprise releases 

 

cosmic deserved waaaay better though. the song is amazing. but i also feel like RV's team failed to make them transcend kpop generations and give them material that would be trendier in the current landscape

Red Velvet has by far the biggest ww hit to ever come out of SM with Psycho. They also had MAJOR American label interest that SM actively ignored to chase the BTS bag with nshitty.

okay but what does that have to do with me (a rv stan mind you) getting dragged on here because i said a month-long preorder period, multiple concept pictures set released in the span of weeks and other gimmicks especially designed for fans would have no impact on its performance on melon? 😭

 

i just randomly thought about it after seeing that karina post because back then i used karina's UP as an example of how it didn't matter at all

It's interesting to me how Red Velvet's velvet side had an actual possibility to breatkthrough in the west compared to any other SM group, but Sm did nothing. Meanwhile Twice, which is as traditional kpop as it gets and with no real possibility of their music relating with the western audience, actually got SOMEWHAT of a push and now they're reaping the benefits by selling out stadiums there.

I didn't backread the whole convo. I thought you were saying promo never matters. Promo matters because it's an indicator of the resources companies are willing to burn.

Yeah it's baffling how we have record execs on record saying they wanted Red Velvet and SM just didn't lift a finger. I'm shocked RV ever made it to million seller status at all the way their company tried to block them outside of Asia. I think non-fans of SM groups seriously underestimate how bad the mismanagement we're always complaining about is.

yea no. i'm just not a believer that extended teasing periods specifically made for fans before release do anything for the song's success on the charts. i do believe there should be more promo post release. even groups who are benefiting from the companies' resources are only getting like 1 or 2 weeks of performances and then everything is over
