wow, i'm actually shocked how bad this album is. What a disappointment… considering how hard I was riding for Lisa 

 

They really picked all the listenable songs for the singles, which made this album release that much more underwhelming. 

I don't like slow songs at all but Dream is crazy. Never could've expected Lisa to serve this kind of variety, especially when so many people expected her to stick to her Blackpink persona

i know it's always been a part of Lisa's aesthetic, since the beginning of BP.. but this "bad girl" persona is so stale and inauthentic, she needs to give it a rest.

 

We all know that k-pop idols are the most controlled , puppeteered artists in the industry, unfortunately. Yes it's been fun and cute, but this album cycle it's becoming too much.

 

They stay trying to paint Lisa as some baddie, Rihanna 2.0 rap-stress, but when you see her in interviews she seems like a shy young girl who likes collecting Popmart toys, with her long-term vanilla boyfriend. 

 

It feel like Rosé has been the most authentic to herself, even though her songs are a snooze fest to me..  Jennie has the same persona as Lisa pushed on her, but it fits her better? She seems more in with the LA lifestyle than Lisa.. I guess it's all just a performing act at the end of the day, so my feelings are quite obviously mixed.

Chill is amazing omg 

it's giving major Britney ITZ/blackout era 

Not feeling the album on the first listen. The standouts are the singles + Thunder, Rapunzel and Dream. The rest will definitely grow on me. Crazy to think that Jisoo's release was more instant but it was a cute album.

I agree with you when it comes to some of what she was given under YG. A couple of old examples that I can remember right now being lyrics like "you gon' finna catch me" and in Lalisa where she was rapping about having a gun and catching a case if you come for her man??? That was definitely inauthentic.

 

But I think she's always been genuinely into hiphop and the bad girl aesthetic, she just also happens to be cute and shy in certain settings. Can those two sides mutually exist? After all this album's whole concept is about having multiple sides of yourself that make you whole and not being one-dimensional

 

I haven't read all of the lyrics yet but the flexing and bragging all feels pretty genuine to me. Like she is a superstar, she does have a crazy fast car collection and live an extravagant life etc. and hey, Freddy he could be a certified freak behind closed doors if she's still dating him 

 

There's people also criticizing her for singing in the more regular, and what might be perceived by some as "more genuine", songs too so she'll never please everyone.

Elastic girl: not for me. This one is bad! Sounds like some TEDDY demo. Putting this one at the beginning of the album is a set up.
 

Thunder: This one is good! 

 

FXCK UP THE WORLD: sounds like a game song. I think it's a step back from the previous singles. It's just like her YGE works. And Future verse added nothing.

 

Rapunzel: I don't like it, idk I don't vibe with it, but I think it's going to translate well in live, so it might grow on me. Megan verse added nothing too.

 

When I'm with you:  Tyla sounds very good on it and Lisa raping was better than her singing. The MV will def look good, I'm sure. It's cute, but the chorus is weak. 
 

BADGRRRL: atp she should have called Teddy if she wanted these type of tracks??

 

Lifestyle: Now this one is a banger and is interesting! Some of the lyrics are a lil cringy, but we can pass. Should have been the new mv instead of FUTW. Seriously, why the Pinks Don't know how to pick good singles…

 

Chill: This one is cute too. A good b side. 

 

Dream: It's another no for me. It doesn't even fit the album. 

 

Like I said a few days ago, the team who did New Woman (Max Martin, Ilya, Tove Lo) should have participated more on the album. New woman and Born Again were good singles. I would have picked Lifestyle too. And I would have started the era with New woman and not Rockstar. 
 

Creatively, the full album is kind of weak; no offense. Some songs could have been released under YGE, there is no difference between some tracks and the Lalisa or Money era. The last minute collabs added nothing, they just waisted their money. 

Rosé album, even if she has a lot of « snoozes » is a better body of work, and we really saw what kind of artist she wants to be, which is unfortunately not the case with Lisa. 
 

Now it's time for her to push Born again and Lifestyle !

i do feel like lisas aesthetic does not match her persona, however as you said she is from a kpop industry in which the imagery is what matters the most sometimes and she has always been branded as the bad girl so her big fanbase already expects this from her so thats exactly what she gives. i also do think she can at least pretend really well cause, at least to me, her songs do not feel unauthentic. matter of fact, moonlit floor and dream where the tracks where i felt didnt fit her the most, and felt like she was trying too hard to push the cutie aesthetic

Why does it matter what her personality is or why does her taking on a persona matter when discussing an album namer ALTER EGO? It's in the name. Lisa's baddie thing is a performance. She's never not said that she loves performing and that it allows her to be someone shes not.

 

Why does authenticity matter here? I personally think Lisa pulls off anything, even acting.

I understand the criticisms about the "badgirl" persona not matching her interviews or real-life personality. But honestly, I think it's because K-pop stars are so heavily manufactured. When they release solo albums in the West, it's tough for them to express their true personalities because they're so conditioned and afraid of saying or doing anything wrong.

 

They've been trained for the past 10+ years to avoid sharing their real opinions or being genuine. It's really sad, and I wish they could break free from the K-pop industry's shackles, but I don't see that happening anytime soon sadly.

 

Jennie even said in an interview that she understood why the VapeGate controversy was an issue and apologised. But in reality, she's a grown woman who can make her own choices and should've told the Knetz to STFU.

 

 

 

 

 

This interview is pretty good, Lisa is obviously much more confident in her native language.

Nothing wrong with stars having on-stage persona that is different from their personality in real life. Look at Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, they are shy in real lift but acting totally different when they're on stage

Gaga's music is so dark and noisy but she's the sweetest cheerful most respectful cute lil 5foot girl in interviews

 

Beyoncé's braggadocious untouchable queen persona on her discography but the sweetest most reserved woman ever in interviews

Exactly, it's a weird double standard that's applied to just K-pop artists to diminish them as "inauthentic", "robotic", and "controlled" (esp when in this case Lisa wrote and created this album under her own company). Tate McRae speaks about being a shy, reserved girl who taps into her bolder, confident alter ego Tatiana in her music and on stage. Beyoncé has an album heavily featuring Sasha Fierce, her aggressive, confident on-stage alter ego. As far back as Madonna, there's a long history of popstars channeling an on-stage persona.

 

Anyways, this is my favorite solo album by a Blackpink member yet. It's pure fun, unbothered pop. Favorites are Chill (), Fxck Up the World (can't wait for her Harley Quinn moment in the music video), and ofc the singles Born Again and New Woman.
