Music svengali Dr. Luke and pop icon Katy Perry are known for their chart topping smash hits as a duo, a fact that has been cited by fans and critics alike as the key reason Katy chose to collaborate with him for the upcoming "143" and lead single Women's World. Follow-up single Lifetimes is certainly less abrasive on the ear canals of the casual listener, but fans and critics seem to agree that the sound is dated, basic, and not up to par with the excellence Katy and Luke brought to the table in the past. Other snippets have received similar reception. 

 

Why couldn't they recapture the magic? What went wrong? Does Luke not have the magic touch anymore? Was Women's World a fluke, and will Lifelines correct the course of an era that is largely considered DOA? 

 

Keep in mind that the GP does not care about Luke and his associated scandals, alleged rape, and proven abuse of women, per ATRL, so this is not a valid excuse. 

 

To put things into perspective, Kesha's independently released surprise single droplet is averaging 200k+ streams more than heavily promoted expensively produced Woman's World, which has fallen off of the Billboard Charts after only one week.

Too corny. I get it that Katy wants to be camp, but we don't want it like that. 

He got lazy and gave her Kim Petras scraps. I think to punish her for not using him for her last 2 albums

I'm afraid Dr. Luke is not a producer you can rely on if you want to release good music in 2024 or, probably, any other time.

A quick look at his production discography is enough to make anyone realize he's not the bright mastermind behind Pop everyone thought he was, and we give him way too much credit considering at his peak he was often in the same room Claude Kelly or Max Martin were. He attached himself like a leech to talented singers and producers, projects that were a golden ticket to commercial success. He's lost that access since he was exposed as an insufferable coworker.

Luke and Katy's sound is tired in 2024. It's as simple as that

the song gave corny 2014 energy and she alienated her core base of pop stans with the luke credit 

 

luke's hits since the kesha scandal have primarily been with rappers with fans that don't know/care about his history

Lifetimes is dated and basic? Funny I remember many on here said that about Teenage Dream and Prism. 

 

Anyways, to answer the question. Every artist peaks. Not many artists who are 16 years past their debut, pushing 40, after two underperforming/flop eras, with large gaps between, are gonna have big hits. ATRL likes to pretend it's the first time to happen.

A complete lack of artistic evolution. They're still chasing the same sound that got Katy attention 10 years ago and there's only so many times you can copy the same song over and over again before it sounds unlistenable

It was a team effort. Katy can't get a hit without Bonnie's involvement and Bonnie can't chart unless she's on the writing credits of a song performed by Katy. How is that hard to grasp?

People will blame Luke but I think the vision was Katy's so it's her fault

All the girls that released house/electronic music underperformed. What made her think she was the one that was going to make it a hit.

Bonnie helped to produce the product that was Katy Perry. Just because people weren't interested in her as a star (and she never got the same level of push as Katy) doesn't mean she wasn't instrumental in several of Katy's hits

Her last hits were Dark Horse and Chained to the Rhythm if we're being generous and yes those had nothing to do with Bonnie afaik. The "magic" of Teenage Dream though would definitely not even exist without the McPen.
