Hype for all 3 artists’ new albums this year was huge. Doja and Olivia were coming off absolutely massive previous eras, while Miley had arguably the biggest single of the year, and people were excited to see how the new era would do. However, arguably all 3 albums (Endless Summer Vacation, Scarlet, and Guts) underperformed compared to the success of major singles (Flowers, Paint the Town Red, and Vampire). Which underperformance was the most surprising / disappointing to you? Or do you not consider these eras commercial disappointments? And if not, then why?

This is her second era and it should be doing a lot better. vampire did ok but the rest made 0 noise... comparing that to the HUGE sour singles its gotta be her. Miley is in her 17 year of career...

ESV did in 2 times better than her previous album and Miley didn't care about commercial numbers at all and disappeared for all year and still got 2 top 10 hits and 6 grammys nominations, Guts was okay, its numbers were good, it's hard to repeat Sour's success, Scarlet is underperformance, couldn't even sell 100k first week

olivia 

Probably Doja. I wasn't expecting those numbers even after Attention bombed but her presence this era has put off her casual fans and actual fans, so the album didn't stand a chance. But unlike Miley and Olivia, Agora Hills is about to be a post-album hit so it worked out in the end. Scarlet is the least selling album of the two though.

 

Olivia's underperformance was expected, and Miley kinda abandoned the era before the album even came out so for all things considered she did fine. 

Even though it went #1 I have to say GUTS all singles aside vampire are bombing hard

out of the 3 olivia but shes doing fine too

Definitely Scarlet & Guts which did much worse than the previous efforts.

Olivia was obviously going to bomb because she is not really interesting or entertaining, her generation consumes Taylor Swift and if they don't then they go for Billie Eilish.  

miley had a fluke hit and her last few albums didn't do that well so her performance wasn't much worse than what should have been expected. doja is a good answer. billie should be the third option instead of olivia

Sure.... 

Miley was never a big album seller especially WW so it’s not surprising. I’ll say Scarlet. It’s a good album, much better than Planet Her. After coming from Planet Her I easily thought she’d do 150k. She’s lucky PTTR stuck. Guts is still succesful. Will reach 2x platinum in the US and platinum across most markets. 

I don't know about commercial underperformance but let's talk about GUTS and its critical overperformance - 91 on metacritic, a cohesive and universally acclaimed sophomore effort  not everyone has that!

nah hunty, Billie already got her fair share of dragging, it's Olivia's time now.

GUTS. It will only have one 1B track on Spotify while SOUR had 7.

Scarlet is the real bomb here, she went from doing like 30+ weeks in the top10 to barely 4, which no one would've thought of in 2021

GUTS was definitely an underperformance but at least she has the excuse of her debut being a behemoth, typical  Interscope mismangement & the album not being very GP friendly

Miley is like 20 years into her career and shouldn't be compared to the other girls imo, the fact that Flowers did so well even with the age factor is impressive in itself

I think it's iconic Endless Summer Vacation is 6 times grammys nominated album without Miley lifting her finger and being on actual vacation all year 😭 she's so hilarious for that. The minute she stopped caring about charts, success and grammys - she got it all and broke the records 😭
