30 debuted with 839,000 album-equivalent units in the US. The era was marked by underperforming singles (sans easy on me) and a messy vegas resident. why did Adele 30 underperform ?

It was still a hit album with a massive smash single. 
 

It was just a (natural) decline from the massive smash eras that were 21 and 25

Easy on Me was Massive tho also 30 is one of the biggest albums this decade and is her 4th Number 1 album in a row. 

Nothing went wrong. It’s the best selling album of 2021 globally despite being released very late into the year and EOM was a smash hit. It’s just that 21 and 25 were SO enormous that anything that came after it would’ve paled in comparison

Safest most boring songs were pushed, and even the songs that pushed her a little out of her comfort zone felt like the same old stuff. The GP probably wasn’t as hyped anymore for their 4th serving of the same.

 

the numbers are ofc still great but in comparison to her other eras it was underwhelming for sure

Nothing went wrong, she literally delivered her most refined body of work showing new colors and meeting, as always, massive success.

nothing happened they stopped promo after the last single OMG and focused on residency 

 

As with most of these "What Went Wrong?" threads, the answer is nothing. Nobodies peak lasts forever and 30 still pulled big numbers.

You know what is the « problem » here: Adele is a physical seller and her album had huge shipments due to 25 being massive. There was clearly a difference between the shipments and what it actually sold that year (you can see it thought the vinyl numbers for example). I am not hating on her but saying it outsold SOUR is wrong.

The world moved on from crying about exes. Also, the image change (which I applaud) warranted a sonic change as well. You can't make the same music you did when you were double the size bc it's simply not believable anymore. I'm sure she could write about million of positive things her journey to a healthier lifestyle has taught her.
