Was Roar the correct lead single for Prism?

Featured Replies

It was obviously a massive, massive success so we don't need to argue about that. But do you think Roar was the correct choice as the lead single for Prism? Or would a different song off the album have done better things for Katy in the long run?

I personally hate the song but clearly was the right choice. The album wasn’t good and had like 5 good songs anyway so it’s not like it mattered.

  • Yes 100%. It smashed out of the gate - the fact it made top 10 year end being released in August was insane  Unconditionally should've never been the 2nd single (it could've been the 3rd single m

  • Yes. It was one of the defining songs of 2013 & was absolutely the correct choice.

I love the song, but I do wish "Walking on Air" was the first single. Or, at least, an actual single.

i think if katy wanted to more effectively make people think the album was a big step away from TD, “spiritual” or “it takes two” would’ve been the right balance between a sonic shift and commercially viable

Unconditionally should've never been the 2nd single (it could've been the 3rd single maybe), and Birthday with a different MV may have smashed and there were so many singles to pick before the tragic "This Is How We Do"

I mean, I guess... but this song is soo annoying... pretty much all the other songs on the album are better.

I don’t like the song but yes it was the correct choice. However, the Teenage Dream era was so massive that anything she chose as the lead would’ve smashed.

Literally this.

Can you all imagine if International Smile and Applause went head to head? :lmao:

yes but i wonder how the era would've been had Dark Horse been the lead.... and then the rest of the album sounds nothing like DH (except maybe LL)

I dont care for it but yes.

Ut was hugeee and the whole applause vs roar drama was a moment for the books :rip:

Yes

Roar sold 500k+ sales first week speaks itself:foxaylove3:

AC/DC rule.

The opening week for the next project is based is a referendum on the prior one.

Anything remotely good would’ve had these numbers for Prism.

Yes, because it was big. I think this was the song that cemented her as a superstar(in my opinion). However, I liked Iternational Smile

Yes. It was the most accessible song on the album. A feel-good, pick-yourself-up message always works with the public.

Dark Horse is the true smasha that also serves quality. As well as showing a departure from Teenage Dream.

It was the right choice. The wrong choice was Unconditionally as the second single, initially ignoring Dark Horse, and Birthday being a single.

The era should've gone:

August 2013: Roar

September 2013: Ghost & Birthday as promo

October 2013: Dark Horse

March 2014: Legendary Lovers

May/June 2014: Walking On Air

September 2014: This Is How We Do

December 2014: Unconditionally

Dark Horse was so powerful that it didn't need the "lead single" hype and promo. :giraffe:

Yes it was.

Releasing unconditionally for the Holidays wasn't a bad idea either.

We al know DH NEEDED to be a single, but I think the combination of how the DH music video portraited her image + choosing Birthday as a single + giving it THAT music video is what expanded the idea she she was childish and uncool
