Should background vocalists start getting credited? UPDATE: Now credited

Featured Replies

On Spotify, Apple Music etc. when you open the song credits?

I wanna know who the hype woman here is. She stepped up! :clap3:

And of course on The Grants.

If its something like Super Bass, yes Ester Dean should get credited.

all of the features from Kanye's TLOP and Travis Scott's new album should get credited.

If its something small, like DJ Khaled's adlibs or Chris Brown's bg vocals on Disturbia, then no.

That would mean having to give any credited BGV streaming royalties, which artists and record companies would never do. Would be fun to have Cathy Dennis for example rack up multiple dozens more credited BB Hot 100 hits though!

no, but when songs are entirely built around a sample, the sampled artist should be listed as at least a featured artist :coffee:

Absolutely not tf 😒 if they sample was cleared and they're already given credit a feature title as well is doing the absolute most. The only upside to this would be artists being forced to make more original material which needs to happen soon with all the sample abuse that's been going on lately

Most of the BV’s on MATM are Penelope Magnet, as well as Courtney Copeland, Roxanne Estrada, and Emma Roads.

Credited as in listed in the artist section of the song; no. More detailed ‘Song Credits’; yes.

I wish they would do the ‘Song Credits’ listings just like physical album booklets were. It would actually be cool if they added a ‘Booklet’ to albums on steaming with photos just like physical albums.

Background vocalists already get streaming royalties and are already officially credited as background vocalists. Most streaming services just don’t bother to list credits beyond songwriters and producers.

in the credits section along with writers and producers? yes please

can't wait to see "Plastic Off The Sofa, background vocals by Sabrina Claudio" :sistrens:

No. Should the person that recorded a snare drum in a sound package be credited for production credits? Some things dont need a full credit. Background vocals are part of the production most of the time. As long as the background vocalist gets paid upfront theres no issue

Most of the time the people that sing background vocals are treated the same as session musicians.

They are credited on the record sleeve, but not in the "performed by" section on streaming.
