Why isn't Jessie Ware smashing

Featured Replies

Hmm not everyone is a pop culture personality. Jessie clearly has advanced her career a lot in the past few years. She needs a bigger song/soundtrack or something like that to have GP but shes doing great on her own.

She said in an interview she didn’t want commercial success. She wanted a low key fun career which explains why they don’t push any of her music.

Look at her music videos it’s obvious just looking at that she doesn’t care about commercial success.

@playboiyou better add her song to the OP for the promo :ryan2:

The gays need to hear her best song

99% of artists don’t ‘smash’

Actually the WYP era was a huge smash for her and catapulted her career, she was very lucky

Being an a-list pop artist is absolutely not the norm in music

Jessie’s music has always been marketed towards critical acclaim as opposed to chart success tbh.

She’s built up a dedicated fan base too. I’d say she’s in a better position (similar to Charli, Carly) than artists with big hits but no fanbase (Meghan, Bebe). Sure they don’t get radio hits, but their fans buy their vinyls and they get booked for big music festivals all over the world.

too gay and old for the public. free yourself is an ANTHEM :flame:

Ok this is a lie.

love her but her music (not all of it tho) is too gay for the GP

This sounds like a multi-million selling, smash single. Yet it's not even debuting on the charts...

It’s good but it sounds very niche-y like most of her music

"Smashing" is really limited to a very small pool of artists

Jessie had one era with major push, since then she's not really been on the GPs radar. She's not smashing with recent music because no one knows it exists outside of music heads and millenial gays.

Lizzo smashed with Truth Hurts and had buzz as an up and coming artist (Jessie once had this). She followed through on the potential with a viral hit, star quality, a huge character and strong distinction from the other pop arist at the time.  Jessie is amazing but on the surface level, I wouldn't expect her to stand out amongst other pop girls. She fits in with the 90% of other artists who are successful but not rich or big names, and that's just fine :)

She is doing well enough to be satisfied with what she does, she can comfortably tour and is exploring her artistry in a way most big artists can't because they are trapped by the expectations of their big record labels. I'd take that any day over smashing worldwide.

OT. Jessie was never about commercial success and mainstream appeal. In the beginning of her career, people compared her to Sade's vocal delivery and smooth sound, which was a stark contrast to the Dr Luke radio hits of the time and even the retro-pop / disco she's been doing recently is not the same as the other retro songs pop radio plays. There is an ocean between songs like Spotlight, Overdrive, Begin Again and stuff like About Damn Time or even Cuff It. They draw from similar pools but they're not similar outcomes. Jessie's retro-pop is more adult and less instantly catchy especially for TikTok kids.

I like her new singles, but they don't sound like smashes at all. WYP is the album that deserved more success.
