What does woke mean to you?

Do you agree with this guy's definition?

Honestly after I’ve had my morning coffee. But I hardly ever have the chance to do that because I wake up late and it’s usually a lunch coffee (not same as morning)

It is the past tense of wake. Like, I woke up this morning.

I agree with him 100%.

'Woke', was a term coined by Black Americans in the early 1900s to signify staying conscious of our plight in the United States, so that's what it means to me.

Exactly this.

Recognizing that there are several institutions in life that willingly or unwillingly push a certain agenda in regards to benefits of being a certain race, a certain sex, a certain ethnicity, what’s in your bank account, etc. It’s acknowledging that there are people in life who do have advantages and priviliges over others because of those things. This is backed up by sociology.

a word that has become very overused by right-wingers to make themselves feel better about the big bad world

Being aware to institutionalized discrimination, but the right-wing has completely co-opted it to be a stand in for anything not white, cisgender or conservative so they can play the victim.

He said a whole bunch of nothing, what is there to agree with?

And other than its original meaning, the word "woke" has been appropriated by right-wingers to the extent of it not becoming a descriptor of anything specific, but everything they dislike (people who aren't white, cis, and straight).

To me, woke is a term taken by right wing people to dismiss a large group of people by pretending this group is some kind of organized entity with clear views and goals, which it's clearly not. They often project extreme views they think are what makes 'woke' to this entire group, only to in the process also subvert the less extreme views, without realizing there's no well-defined idea all 'woke' people share.

The man in this video is talking a whole lot of bullshit, too. He can pretend the 'old left' mostly cared about wealth distribution and the 'new left' is only about 'identity politics', but he fails to see we need to address all kinds of identities to achieve exactly that better wealth distribution. As long as chances in life are partly determined by your background, your gender, your sexual orientation, or whatever, we need to talk about it. Those things are intertwined, not two seperate things like he states in this video. The difference between him and the woman describing woke also proves my point that their fear of what 'woke' is or could be, is much different from what most 'woke' people actually want for the world

It's a term that almost nobody uses to describe themselves but a term which the right weaponizes by inventing a problem that doesn't exist.

Is the one I should be listening to Sean? If so, then he's an idiot and remarkably lazy.

Seans are exactly why the left has made little to no progress economically, why? Because leftism that doesn't address identity is half-baked and self serving to white people's interest(which was the point.) White people of the civil rights era and white people from Sean's era are two completely different group of people on the left; one understands that class is a problem but that's all. The other is the correct form of far reaching leftism which uses identity politics in plurality AND addresses class disparities which is what leftism ought to be doing.

Capitalism is the beast of many forms and a single spear has never been strong enough to slay it, classic "I'm the smartest man in the room" syndrome exists in a lot of white leftist brains because they think if we all just unite under the banner of "working class" then everyone will just get along if we ignore the racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia etc. They don't want to do the work of wearing multiple hats at once, even though the enemy literally wears multiple hats at once, hence it's hard to identify and hit correctly.

Tldr; when your definition of a civil rights term forgets the civil rights, you are not a leftist worth listening to.
