Not when it comes to the autotuning on their groups though, it seems :emofish:

Yeah but the auto tuning is for effect, not because the acts have no talent. That’s a big difference.

No I just wonder where the sudden Boa hate comes from

She’s a woman over 14, sis. She’s going to go through the same thing that Madonna went through when she started to “age out.” We even have users serving “leech” posts in here like there’s a K-pop star alive who wouldn’t be dying to work with her.

In this case the NCT comparisons are somewhat valid because of the Dem Jointz production.

But it's not a bad thing in this case, they sound great on the song and the vocals definitely elevate it. Other companies could learn several things from the vocal production on Stamp On It :matty:

I would pay money for HYBE and JYP to take vocal production lessons from SM. Can you imagine how much greater ANTIFRAGILE would have been if a professional mixed the vocals?

SM has this weird thing with oversinging and overproduction its insane. Its like they have all these resources, vocalists, production, that they're all trying to stack it all one over the other thinking its gonna be a good product. Absolute ZERO cohesion, less is DEFINITELY more and you can see it with the HYBE girlgroups.

YG is the polar opposite, while many consider them noise a lot of YGs sound is definitely minimalistic, lots of just bass and white noise + 808s. SM just abuses autotune, synthesizers and backing vocals like there's no tomorrow its crazy.

GOT has been 0/2 so far, Step Back was a dud and so was this.

On other news, can't wait for future GLOBAL girlgroup NewJeans next cohesive sounding smasha! They'll destroy Spotify with OMG I fear, see when you make a song that has an actual MELODY!

See, that’s the problem - you all want generic fodder like NewJeans from GOT when they have no interest in an uninspired, bland track. You’re serving Maroon 5/Coldplay stan thinking a generic HAC single with no vocal nuances, no hint of originality and no personality is somehow better just because it’s streaming playlist fodder.

I would have been pissed if we got something as unsalted and unseasoned as “Ditto” from girls who can belt. Leave the 2015’d Red Velvet demos in the past, sis.

This. Call it redundant but YG songs are listenable, ignoring repetitiveness they're actually good. A lot of the BLACKPINK criticism is the 'same old same old' drag but independently, all of their songs are straight up fire (criticism is still valid though)

With SM? Its just absolute noise. No vibes, no rhythm, no melody to latch onto, just oversinging, bare top melody and synths exploding everywhere with a chanting BGV.

Are you really going to try and argue that Pink Venom, Shut Down and Still Life were better than Feel My Rhythm, INVU, Girls, Step Back and Forgive Me? :ahh:

SM literally served us some of the best album cuts ever in K-pop (Timeless, In My Dreams, Time After Time, Priority, basically the INVU album, etc.) and YG’s best album cut was a 2020’d clone (Typa Girl) and they only had one other good album cut in all of 2022 (Tally).

I hate LSM more than anyone except maybe Zack but the output this year was clearly: SM > HYBE > JYP = YG.

I disagree. Vocally you can hear the pitch correction is doing a lot of heavy lifting on the songs and the overuse seems to be on nearly every HYBE song, which suggests its use is less out of stylistic choice and more out of necessity. :emofish:

Their album cuts are their strength. But their title tracks have been less than inspired. INVU aside tho. That was the best SM title track released in 2022. Period.

2023 just started and let's take a look at the Big 4 and their active groups this year: (I only included the main bread winners)

YG:

- BLACKPINK

- Baby Monster

- TREASURE

JYP

- TWICE

- Stray Kids

- ITZY

- NMIXX

SM

- aespa

- Red Velvet

- NCT 127

- NCT Dream

HYBE

- TXT

- ENHYPEN

- SEVENTEEN

- LE SSERAFIM

- NewJeans

Which company will come on top this year? Rank them! :santa:

My ranking and prediction looks like this:

1. HYBE

2. JYP

3. YG

4. SM

LE SSERAFIM, BABYMONSTER and NewJeans will be the three GGs fighting over top group position imo.

What's nice about 4th gen K-pop is now we are at a point where the girlgroups have an actual fighting chance of leveling it out with the boygroups in terms of physicals. Sure no ones cracking 3M but every GG is already selling 1M-2M, on par with top tier BGs + they have actual SMASH hits.

I can see LE SSERAFIM bagging another smasha that resonates with the global audiences while NewJeans continues their chokehold on the domestic market. SKZ will never be general public darlings so I can see them being #3.

I don't know about BABYMONSTER tho wtf their concept is.

The girls do sing during their interviews tho and when they’re singing acapella you can hear the talent. :emofish:

Pink Venom and Shut Down are personally songs I like more. I know INVU is objectively a great song and so is FMR but I don't like them the way I like Pink Venom, the attitude in that song is just NEXT LEVEL :jonny5:

SM will never be able to do something like ANTIFRAGILE simply because they've always been a decade behind actual Western music trends.

And not this holier than thou attitude like experimental = good (its not, 90% of the time if its not f(x) its garbage). K-pop is literally pop music, why are you expecting Bjork levels of pop innovation when K-pop has always been derivative of Britney Spears/Janet pop music lmao :deadbanana4:

and not the vocal nuances argument lmfao its giving average Redditor :toofunny3:

Xioajun is probably one of the most wasted idols in SM. He should've never debuted in WayV but instead in either 127 or Dream.  He's one of the best vocalist of NCT and he's kinda the hottest NCT member (yes even more than Lucas and Jaehyun I fear)

My ranking and prediction looks like this:

1. HYBE

2. JYP

3. YG

4. SM

YG: it depends if blackpink gets a comeback this year, I think baby monster would perform good but not smash out of the gate, and treasure will perform the same, good but it wont gain audience.

JYP: Sks grew its audience and I feel a lot of army will also start supporting them, I believe twice and itzy would likely underperform a bit compare to their last cbs and nmixx is a wild card it could go either way

SM: nct dream will continue to outperform while nct 127 will be stable, with newer groups and people moving on to 4th gen i feel red velvet will decline, and aespa will either be stable or gain audience if sm plays its cards right

Hybe: txt and enhypen most likely gain support from army so their cbs should do very well and maybe double their album sales numbers, the hype with new jeans is massive i think they will be the top gg of this year. And with how big Antifragile was le sserafim next cb could really do well too.

I think it will be

1- Hybe

2- JYP (mainly due to stray kids)

3- SM

4- YG (but if blackpink gets a cb it could be higher)

Regardless the 4 companies are up to get their best year each so it's a win for all of us

I also believe that smaller companies (Starship, cube, rbw) will perform well this year, sorry for the long post

the buildup, the breakdown and then those SYNTHESIZERS whew! The other girls just dont know how to build a HYPE song I fear!

aespa better serve with Thirsty. They need to prove themselves they are still standing tall among the new 4th gen GGs. :jonny2:

You’re right the production is basic but it hits. Didn’t age :WAP:

Of course, SM sheep always directs the talk towards vocals when it is not the main point at all. We get your faves are oh so amazing singers. Their songs still suck and are unlistenable.

I would seethe too if my faves were stuck singing disjointed mess like Girls or Birthday, while others get bland, uninspiring songs like Ditto, Love Dive or Antifragile

Rolling Stone really needed those clicks from the stanbase when they added Jungkook as one of The Top 200 Greatest Singers of all time. The EXO Vocal line Baek, Chen and D.O. clears him easily. :deadbanana4:

There's a reason songs like After Like become legendary on TikTok and have become trends to dance on NYE, because they're LISTENABLE and ACCESSIBLE pop music in k-POP.

Sadly SM is too Pitchfork now only people from r/music on Reddit can probably listen to Girls or Birthday (wtf was that song omg). I support my SM girlies especially Aespa and king Jaehyun but I will only be there on release date, I have not listened to Girls at ALL beyond Illusion (which is probably one of the best songs of 2022)

INVU was the best title of 2022, period, and the album is one of the best ever in K-pop. But I don’t know how you could say FMR, Forgive Me and Girls were uninspired. Girls is the best vocal performance in K-pop in 2022. I know it’s not easy listening so most users find it jarring, but that is less about the song being “bad” and more about certain users having narrow tastes.

I just like that SM doesn’t give in to stan pressure to release generic fodder. It would be a waste for them to seek and train idols of a certain talent level to only give them Katy Perry’d songs.

Shut Down was awful and probably the biggest disappointment of 2022. It was BlackPink’s “Uh Oh,” but even lazier. But I do agree about Pink Venom. It had personality in the chorus and the chants were amazing. It’s just that the first verse was meh and the bridge/outro were so played out and dull.

I feel that Pink Venom could have been a much better song if they had some sort of vocal moment or some ad-libs from the girls. Like what is the point of having four girls with such unique tones and then not giving them a chance to show off their vocal colors?

Take off your stan glasses for a minute and lets discuss the shortcomings each company has, it doesnt have to do with the artists/idols but mainly the decision making each company has with concepts, production and promotion planning, also what would you do fix the issue?

Better A&R reps and creative directors picking music that works to their groups strengths instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

I can see the overall 2023 group rankings (taking into account singles, album sales, general online hype and discussions), assuming BTS is OUT and BLACKPINK are thrown back into the dungeon after touring, being:

1. NewJeans (unless a Garam scandal hits them, no BG/GG is coming for their domination)

2. SKZ (MASSIVE seller, I bet a lot of the BTS stans will slowly transition to support them)

3. Baby Monster (I can see a monster debut, probably a PAK like BlackPink)

4. IVE/LE SSERAFIM (Honestly its a toss up, Le Sserafim is easily the 2nd biggest K-pop group after NJ on global streaming platforms like Spotify while IVE has been smash after smash after smash in Korea)

5. Aespa (the girls have a lot of catching up to do not just domestically but globally as well IVE LSF and NJ are already way above them and BBM will probably join them soon. Sure GIRLS sold a **** ton but literally no one cared about them a month post-release while Hype Boy and ANTIFRAGILE have spent 4 months and counting on Spotify Global 200)

None of the boygroups are making waves beyond SKZ tbh, TXT is a nonfactor, maybe SEVENTEEN can pull an upset but I doubt any of them have the global presence the 6 groups I mentioned above have. SperM will be another colossal try hard attempt at a Western push, EXO and TWICE are hasbeens, ITZY is just literally standing there in the middle singing way above their vocal range as usual while NMIXX just lost another member. NCT is just kinda there, big sales, little to no celebrity splash.

Always with the 'Girls' sneak

There's sadly some truth to stans not liking songs after they flop but not even aespa liked that one:dies:

1. SM - Do something new with the boy groups. Their last memorable boy group hit was when the Baby Monster girls were like six. The girls are so versatile and almost every female SM idol is able to serve unique tones. But I couldn’t tell you a single male idol from SM that debuted within the past 10 years if you put a gun to my head. They need to borrow JYP’s choreographers, too.

2. YG - Release more. When you put out disappointing releases, it hurts even more when it’s the only release in two years. Nobody cares about Birthday and After Like and Attention sucking because those groups got other great releases this year. One release every year or two puts too much pressure. Also, switch up the formulas and do some ad-libs for God’s sake.

3. HYBE - Learn to mix vocals. Like what the **** happened with Hype Boy and ANTIFRAGILE and how did you drop the ball on your two best songs? They have the worst vocal mixing in modern K-pop by a mile.

4. YG - They just need to start putting vocalists in groups and thinking of new concepts. If I have to see ITZY in suits ever again I’m going to puke. Their concept department is at an all time low. They can swap their choreographers for SM’s concept Department.
