Pop singers =/= artists

Featured Replies

I know its common to call "pop singers" "artists" but sometimes it's a big reach.

Can we really talk about "art" when the "singer" or mostly the "entertainer" does...

- lip sinc

- use autotune

- doesn't write his/her/them songs or just add their names to get royalties

- put more energy on social media and make up/clothes business than on music

- put a lot of $$$ for a show that doesn't worth the price

I say let's not be pretentious and gatekeep what is art and what isn't. An unpretentious pop star is still a music artist :rip:

that's why I only stan male artists (Real but underrated talent)  but I love my pop girls! if they release bops that's all that matters :jonny6:

male artists are underrated? gurl since when they're outselling the girls with ease

I mean it's like eating MaDonnald's and real food. You can have both but it's important to know what is quality and what is plastic sprinkles.

ones I stan are underrated! :lakitu:  lol I don't stan Harry, Justin Or Drake.  only locals sadly!

Instead of trying to decide which pop stars are 'artists' and who are not, isn't it just easier to discuss whether the 'art' is good instead? They're all artists, you just think some of them make low quality art while others make high quality art :cm:

I've never really understood this criticism because directors and actors don't usually write their own scripts (some do, but it's not expected of them to do so) but we expect all singers to write their own songs and if they have more than, like, two songwriters credited we criticise them. Why?

what kind of misogyny... only male artists can have real talent? disgusting.

I'm gonna use my fave as an example

-rarely lip syncs and I can tell

-he said he specifically re worked this album to put less autotune

-we all know he produces his own work

-all he does is show the music process

-nope

Oh I didn't mean to say only male artists have talent. Most talented artists are females.

Heck I only really stan 5 males and most my faves are girls.

Just my 2 faves TO ME at least. Are talented then most current MPGs (not all)

Nothing you said made sense at all, art comes in different ways, shapes and forms, to try and patronize what's art and what isn't and who's an artist and who isn't is the clear example of not understanding what is art. Fool.

Mariah Carey is the perfect example of an exceptional singer, even more exceptional songwriter and producer and whilst she's the GOAT, it doesn't mean that people that do less than her cannot be artists.

Not even in straight rock-based communities there's space left for this obsolete and completely out of touch take.

You guys disagree with this take? That's weird. Some "artists" are just taking demos and focusing on their celebrity power selling the music, and are not talented. I do not know if that's a true artist

No one cares. Critics only hate pop music in general. No Matter who wrote it or sang it.

Pop singers are still artists. Art can be created in many ways

It depends on the pop star. As others have said, art is art. However, some 'artists' aren't involved at all in the creative process and sometimes they can't sing at all.

So I'd say you're kinda right, but let's not gatekeep art (too much).

Exactly

people are booing you but you're right. many pop girls are just marketing machines to sell a product and that's fine. no need for all these aggressive responses. not every singer can be an artist
