Is ageism over?

Featured Replies

Nicki's smashing hard possibly debuting at  #1, Beyonce just snatched a solo #1. Lizzo's also pushing 40 and just recently went  #1. Let's not forget Kate Bush is smashing right now in her 60s and most of the lead artists in the Hot 100 top 10 right now are over 30. Is ageism on its way out?

And after some quick research I found that Jack Harlow and Harry Styles are literally the only artists in their 20s that have gone #1 this year as lead. Everyone else is 30+ : Mariah, Adele, Drake, Future, Glass Animals, We dont talk about Bruno lady, Beyonce, Lizzo and now Nicki

Are we entering a new era of the GP favoring old popstars or just a coincidence?

No Madonna did she was 50 when 4 minutes smashed.

I mean Cher was 52 when Believe smashed in 1998 and she did it solo. But Cher and Madonna were the exceptions not the rule

Idk about over but it’s definitely not as much of a factor as it used to be. The media used to make fun of older artists a lot more, which contributed to ageism. People don’t care as much these days

Bey and Nicki have had a big fanbase for a while. Kate Bush was an-out-of-nowhere anomaly. Lizzo kind of makes more sense but then I still think these exceptions don't make for normalcy. It's great that women over 38 years are having success in ways that haven't been seen in a while but it needs to extend to more acts for us to say ageism is over.

. This

Beyoncé and Nicki are some of the last major music stars left, and Lizzo is not in their age range, so no. We can’t let anomalies define the entire market.

Sia and Ava Max single-handedly ended ageism.

No, look at all the Nicki thread, this past week. Ageism is here to stay unfortunately.

Almost fully agree with this, although I've noticed this new generation is obsessed at the same time with age, saying "25 is very old already".

Ageism has never been something that occurs as soon as someone turns 30. Most pop girls who fade out after 30 do more so due to their own blunders rather than because of the public suddenly hating them because of their age. There have been so many successful eras by women older than 30 (Music, All For You, Fever, A New Day Has Come, A Day Without Rain, Up!, LAMB, The Emancipation of Mimi, The Duchess, The Sweet Escape, Confessions On A Dancefloor, I Dreamed A Dream, The Truth About Love, Beyonce, Lemonade, A Star Is Born, Folklore etc.)  in the 21st century that it's just not a fair claim to make.

The only reason we didn't have too many 30+ pop stars in the 2010s was that there really weren't several female pop stars in their 30s in the early part of the decade (the only late-70s born MPGs are Shakira and P!nk, for instance), and the ones that were in their 30s like Britney, Christina, Katy etc. all released bad albums with poor publicity.

the newer generations don't know who Mariah carrey and Kate bush are

Thanks to social media, artists now have the ability to curate their presence to younger audiences. Like Lizzo and Doja for example, post content on TikTok that is fun and accessible to Gen Z. Also, I feel like there’s an understanding now that the 30s are still a very early phase of life, especially since we live longer now. We get to see celebs and creators over 30 all the time on social media and become familiar with them, recognizing that they’re not all “out of touch” or impossible to relate to.

The new artist are boring and trash..they have no choice.

Honestly that is why music was more timeless in the 70s and 80s...the "middle aged pop stars" served LEGENDARY BOPS.
