Evermore: Flop or Success?

I think more than anything it's a success in what she was trying to do. It secured her that AOTY of folklore. It kinda kills the criticism that folklore was her cosplaying an aesthetic. It also really solidified her overall reputation as a musician first. I don't think fearless/red would be this well received if they followed folklore directly. Her goodwill is immense right now.

How did evermore secured her an AOTY nomination? I always here that she released Evermore to campaign for Folklore, but ever understood how.

OT: It was a great success even for her, most people don’t get 2X platinum albums these days. Willow was also #1

She released it during the Grammy vote period. This probably gave her a boost as the two albums were highly associated with each other. Awarding folklore was a way of awarding evermore at the same time.

It basically kept her name in the headlines at the right time and demonstrated that her capacity for the songwriting and the sound of Folklore wasn’t a fluke. It legitimized her genre shift and sealed the deal on people thinking that she deserved AOTY recognition again. One thing to note here is that many publications even ranked the two albums together as one entry on year-end lists - it shows that people largely view Evermore as an extension of Folklore rather than its own distinct body of work.

Multiple weeks at #1, a #1 hit, universal acclaim, an Album of the Year nomination…

Lover wishes to have any of these things. :sistrens:

A success

- 4 weeks at #1 on BB200

- has a #1 hit

- almost 2B streams on spotify without a smash hit

- almost 2M units in the US

- Aoty nom at the grammys

- will probably reach 100 weeks on the charts

Got it! Thanks for expla:heart2:ining

For Tays standards it was an obvious underperformance, but ha standards are high.

evermore was largely overshadowed by folklore and the re-recordings, but it was still a very successful album.

A hit in the states, an underperformance/flop everywhere else.

It's going to be 2X platinum eligible in a few months, it's almost been streamed 2 Billion times on Spotify, it has a #1 single, it spent 4 weeks at #1, it was nominated for AOTY, it's an entirely unprompted album that got one live performance across the entire era (which lasted 9 weeks before getting cut off), and did I mention that it's a ******* indie-folk record with very little mainstream pop appeal. If that was any other pop girl's album, let alone their NINTH album, we would be in complete agreement that it was a smashing success, all factors considered. It might be Taylor's worst performing album, but it's doing a lot better than many "smashes" from the other girls.

Reputation is a flop now?? :deadbanana2:

The album is going to be 6x platinum when it's all said and done.

No acoustic folk album that goes platinum will ever be a flop.

An acoustic folk Grammy campaign that has sold almost 2 million EAS.  In what world can that be considered a flop?

"Acoustic folk" :bibliahh:

It did good given it was released like 4 months after folklore with minimal promotion (+surprise release)
