Wicked best shot at Oscar will be original song with Ariana/Cynthia. With Ariana popularity and Cynthia standing in industry, it is about to be strong contender.

Other than that, it seems like a bust.

I was also confused then I came across this on twitter

This doesn't necessary mean much, but WB have been losing money with DC movies back to back especially The Flash last year was disaster for them.

Furiosa also bombed for them this year.

So they might be conservative with marketing budget.

I actually think WB having so many flops would be incentive enough to go all out and drop huge marketing funds on one of their projects with actual hype.

JFAD's first month alone should help them recover losses.

With a $200 million budget already invested, I expect WB. to focus more on the film's quality rather than heavy marketing. Given that it's an R-rated drama jukebox musical—not a lighthearted, entertaining experience like Deadpool—there's less room for the mass appeal that a big marketing push might bring. The more they spend, the more the film needs to earn at the box office just to break even, and right now, Warner Bros. is already facing significant financial challenges.

As someone else pointed out, I believe Gaga and her red carpet appearances will be the centerpiece of the marketing campaign. In contrast, Beetlejuice is a PG-13 movie that's getting extensive marketing because it has the potential to attract a broad audience, including families etc

Need FàD to make it to one more festival. Would much rather TIFF than NYFF tbh.

The alleged NYFF date is just the day before the movie is out dd, what's the point? I guess just being part of the festival's roster :matty:

makes sense the original Joker premiered at Venice, followed by screening at TIFF

Deadpool obviously has a broader appeal, the R rating on Deadpool is basically just eliminating just a chunk of families but it's likely replacing it with young adults that probably wouldn't go to an MCU x-men movie for the sake of it.

With Joker, we'll see, there's obviously hype but this is probably just as much of a gritty drama as the first one and then you add the musical aspect and we'll see where the demographics land. One would have to hope women would be more attracted to this one than the first, ergo a bit of a younger Audience as well to offset some of the male audience who is probably put off by the musical aspect.

Luca Guadagnino's Queer will be the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd edition of the festival.

Last year's Spotlight Gala was Maestro and the Spotlight section of the festival included 16 smaller films. I feel like a NYFF premier for Joker is unlikely if it was not selected for the Gala but we'll see.

Barbie came out July 2023 but they were really pushing it since early 2023. There was a lot of merch, dolls, promotion... etc.

are you guys seriously comparing Barbie with Joker? A family kid-friendly movie which has universal appeal to a mental health dark R-Rated twisted movie? Lower your expectations jesus

Because it's not true. The line up was already announced and Joker is not part of it!

Wicked doesn't qualify for Best Original Song unless they've written new material for the movie.

We're not talking about an obscure A24 movie, Joker is one of the most beloved comics character, with the first movie doing 1 billion dollars, JFAD teaser already surpassed in views the 'Barbie' one, the movie has been mentioned just for marketing reasons, not for the genre, there's no way that WB is on a budget when it comes to a project of this caliber, the promo will be on point.
