Older AC audiences are weak nowadays anyway. Basically no standard AC act is smashing currently. Even Adele underperformed. They kinda morphed into the country scene imo.

Gen Zs can relate on ballad/mellow songs. Look at Olivia Rodrigo. 
 

Gen Zs in Asian countries love ballad/mellow songs that they can relate. Hence, Taylor and Ed are huge here. Sour was also a streaming smash in Asia particarly in SEA.

Sure, but Olivia's types of ballads are very different from stuff like I'll Never Love Again and Hold My Hand. The writing and production styles are very different.

 

AC is ultimately a radio format, not a genre in itself. And the tastes of its audience have changed, making 80s soft pop and 90s pop ballads basically DOA in the current scene. Synthpop, country pop, and chill "vibey" pop has taken over. Fad doing a bunch of old-school big ballads just isn't the move imo.

I honestly think she would put the nail in the coffin of her mainstream commercial career if she focuses on ballads on her next record, Shallow worked because it was tied in a big way to a blockbuster movie and had lightning in a bottle viral appeal, so many artists have died on the path of trying to recreate success like that. She needs to pivot and do something different and true to where her head is in that moment so she can actually fully commit to the album cycle in a way that she didn't for Chromatica, because even though that album was full of bangers I could very clearly tell it wasn't made for her, it was made for us, and she didn't seem to really connect with what she was making.

 

Barely any artists in 2023 have guaranteed success in anything they do so I personally think she should use the opportunity to just go balls to the wall and make a record that she's always wanted to make. Everything she puts out always feels stunted and impersonal in some kind of way, I can always feel ideas she wants to explore but doesn't because it wouldn't necessarily be commercial and I feel like she holds back in her songwriting to keep some layer of privacy and class, I think she should shed all of it and just unleash her full self as an artist.

 

If i could pick anything, I would love for her to do some real punky, trashy, attitude filled rock music. Not the kind of slow americana we got on Joanne. Gaga can sustain a healthy career by feeding gays pop music for years to come but I think she is at a turning point to decide if she can secure a legacy as an acclaimed musician in her own right beyond that, she hasn't had much praise for her personal musiciainship since her early albums.
