what you said is very true - but i do think she has fully built up a reputation and audience for these ballads either in Hollywood or making timeless record - the ballads i think is her using her big voice to do award vehicles and serve her own career and its really worked - TIHTY/HMH not so much commercially but for the latter it literally rebuilt her credibility in hollywood following the snub and its becoming a reality talent show girlie. 

if she had a go at doing an adele record more bluesey with a fall rollout im not sure it would ruin her career if its quality but she DOES thrive the most when she does something totally new and throws every part of her in it. e.g. acting, C2C. so its a case of just finding the new thing and doing it again like you said.
