The way many Gaga fans cringe at her being personal in her songs need to be studied, but swifties often enjoy Taylor songs by finding the details of her personal life in her songs. Like Dope, BOG, Fun Tonight, Grigio Girls etc. Somehow we hate her being too personal with us. Part of me wonder if it's because she often write songs in abstract ways so the fans naturally lean towards songs like that, when she goes deep personal they find it annoying. Some food for thought.

It's the lyrics. You and I, So Happy I Could Die, Speechless and Happy Mistake, for example, are personal songs that resonated well with the fanbase and the public because they feature strong lyricism, good melodies and a concept that goes beyond "this topic is personal so the song needs to be a) stripped back ballad or b) dance through the pain basic pop song".

The problem is not her writing a song about her deceased friend who died of a horrible illness. The problem is that all she had to say in a song was "Her name was Sonja, she was 25 years old, she was Joanne's best friend, we listen to Spice Girls". There is no issue with her ending Mayhem singing about her engagement, the issue is the song basically is a repeat of "put that ring on my finger, put my ring on my finger, we're two lovers and the world is a garden, so the ring is grass, got it?". It's the same problem people had with Hair, which was already pushing it back when it came out. "I just want people to invite me to their parties" is a legit feeling but... did she have to be so literal? Is that how she wanted to express herself?

And the whole "I'm pouring my feelings on fame/mental ilness/depression into a song but I will make it... fun!" got tired already. Take The Dead Dance for example. Yes, it might be about her relationship with Carino, but just like Wildest Dreams is about Taylor's relationship with Alexander Skarsgard, there's worldbuilding there, they are both personal, but not in your face. Replay is another perfect example of the theme being in your face but it features strong lyricism like "Every single day, I dig a grave then I sit inside it, wondering if I'll behave".

Fair points, but let's not use Sabrina's blatant payola for #1s as an example. The way her singles all stall and then suddenly gain 500 spins daily and then plunge -1000 after going #1 is.. :deadbanana4:

Even ICDIWABH was payolad on radio.

the only song i remember that was a legit post album single was BOAF.

I obviously want her to write about whatever she wants, but some of her best writing in my opinion is on her more detailed/less universal songs.

Can someone explain to me why you all hate Blade of Grass but love Happy Mistakes?

Can't speak for others, but I personally find propose culture repulsive. And the Ava Max melody doesn't help.

This is a tired excuse, and not true anyways.

Post album hits are uncommon, but a lot of artists still release radio singles and put them on playlists. Taylor herself did it with ICDIWABH, Sabrina did it with Bed Chem and both songs went #1 on pop radio and charted on the Hot 100 for months. Tate is also pushing Revolving Door on radio now and it's about to enter the top 10 on pop.

These songs didn't need to be big hits, or even have music videos (even tho that's another thing that should've happened around album release or Coachella but let me not), getting airplay and even a small increase in streams would've at least helped the album to have more stability, on top of just being great songs that deserved to reach more people. And singles, big or not, always help albums in the long run with higher recurrent streams than album tracks.

Both ICDIWABH and especially Bed Chems went viral on TikTok BEFORE being pushed. And those are the two biggest pop artists right now. Both of them cut those massive eras short to jump to the next one barely one year later, before TikTok they would have had 5-6 singles with MVs.

The production in the chorus is such a letdown IMO though. The verses are so immaculate, and then the chorus is.. Empty feeling. That brings TDD down to a 6/10 or 7/10 to me.

She isn't a new artist that still needs to play the radio payola game like Tate and Sabrina's label did for them, it would literally do nothing for her music. It's great that Taylor still does that, but I think she just did it because she didn't want to look bad to her fans with only one single the whole era.

I too would love to see Interscope try to do that but that's just unrealistic. They would only push songs on the level of Wildflower of Billie, and sorry to say none of MAYHEM album tracks is on that level.

Besides, Gaga literally is very busy this year, she doesn't have time to prepare an post album single. Maybe she could if she didn't do Wednesday and is literally on her biggest tour, but that's another story. She gave us John Wayne and 911 even though she didn't have to during their time, so if she could she probably would. So I think we need to drop the obsession with more singles and music videos and look what she has already been serving us. Like the situation is very clear, I don't know why this has to be said over and over again.

Taylor's intimate way of writing has always been her thing since day 1, it's what made her popular. The straight girls (her primary audience) could relate to her on a personal level, and  the main reason why her mediocrity in other areas (e.g. vocals) are often overlook.

It's not that Gaga fans are cringing to her personal songs, it's just that those you listed have some sort of things that holding them back from being more appreciated. I guarantee you had she properly sang Dope, 90% of the fanbase wouldn't hate it. Blade Of Glass is another one- whiny, nasally vocals, but the most offensive aspect is the melody. I don't know about you guys but for me, Gaga has the strongest melody game among the popgirls- and she chose the most generic melody ever for her arguably most personal MAYHEM song. Generic lyrics- I can get over it. So-so production? Eh but sure, but generic melody on top of those? That's overkill.

This,

its giving that song by dua dance the night away, a slow burner song

And even Wildflower's push was late/all timed wrong. :rip:

What if I'm standing in your closet trying to talk to you?
What if I kept the hand-me-downs you won't grow into?
And what if I really thought some miracle would see us through?
What if the miracle was even getting one moment with you?
Come on baby with me, we're gonna fly away from here
Come on baby with me, we're gonna fly away from here
You were my best four years

With the concept of the song being a lullaby for a boy that lost his life too early, painting the story of how he fought hard up until the very last minute and sadly now he is resting in heaven. Compare that to:

Sisters never pack up
We always run back, love
Seven years ago
I said you'd make it
Sonja was Joanne's friend
Tough girls on the mend
So when I'm feelin' small
I toss that cork and call

Even if she's framing Sonja's story through her female friends. There's no connection to the melody, there's no concept, the lyrics just don't say anything. Yes, we stick together when we're feeling down. Not every song needs to have thesaurus lyrics or complex melodies, but when all ingredients fail and the unique selling point is connecting to her personal story... it's just not well received. Sometimes she just gets uninspired when talking about her. Like Abracadabra, Lovegame, Paparazzi, Poker Face... they all do INCREDIBLE storytelling around concepts, with strong melodies... and Blade of Grass is just "I'm getting married" with generic ballad melody over basic piano.

It's okay to not like the song and video, but damn.. On Twitter and here, some of her fans are the meanest to her constantly. :rip: She could've just cut the era at Abracadabra like every other veteran pop girl, did zero music videos, did zero TV performances, cashed in on 15 stadium dates, and said goodbye. Hell, she could've thrown DWAS onto the album and not even done Abracadabra's video.

She gave four singles, four videos, multiple headlining concerts, TV slots, and a long tour, and people trash her as if she stayed home all year.

She's damn near 40 with 20 years under her belt, millions of records sold, one of the most awarded and famous artists OF ALL TIME. Some of you need a reminder she's CHOOSING to still do this. Shes at the stage of her career she could wake up any day and break her contract and say; nah, I'm done.

All of this without mentioning she's physically ill and has decades of severe mental health challenges. She has the money to call it quits. She doesn't. Some respect to her name would be nice.

Everyone's got me sounding like a ******* cupcake the last 24 hours.

/end rant

Does TDD single version have different streams than the album version?

Dope has amazing lyrics and that doesn't stop fans hating on it. And yes, I also defend her choice of vocal in Dope, it's fitting for it. Not everything has to be beautiful and well crafted, the live taping is what makes it raw and genuine.

In general liddos love her songs that's bigger than hers, either it's entirely because they're just better and she is terrible at writing personal things, or it's her brand of being bigger than life so her fans gravitate towards that more.

It's not confirmed but this is my theory. Mayhem is rising on Apple Music, but the dead dance (single) is falling… which makes me think there is a second version (mayhem version) not charting that is garnering streams
