I hate how ageist radio is. The reason Ari and Dua became the streaming queens is in large part because of radio. Gaga’s rise was impacted by radio. It’s like they totally turned their back on her.

radio virtually has no effect on streaming anymore tho lol Stupid Love was massive on European radio. When women get older they cant put out pop songs and be flavour of the month, GP go for the 20 year old females instead to get their disposable pop bops.  Happens to them all.

Anyways Chromatica is a lil over rated cause she gave ya'll dance era blue balls for so long. it's a mid album. its better than joanne/artpop, but no way near as good as TFM/ASIB/BTW

Just because the current batch of liddos is tasteless doesn't mean the next one has to be.

The current batch might be tasteless but they got at least one thing right

JOPANNED remains a stain in her discography and I will NOT be silenced after forcing myself to enjoy it back in the 2016 when I was starving

Yeah that was an asterisk like with BTW's 1m opening sales, only to be proven that they used this asterisk for every other Oscars winning cast.

They way OGHs keep embarrassing themselves:dies:

You’re doing too much. Joanne is a cute girl that gave us Diamond Heart, Joanne, John Wayne, Million Reasons, and Dancin In Circles.

It had some great moments (Diamond Heart, John Wayne, Dancin' In Circles, Perfect Illusion, Million Reasons) but the second half is almost unlistenable to me noawadays :deadbanana4:

It would have made a great EP though, I'll give you that

Joanne was a truly humiliating "this is the real me, no artifice, just real music!! Please take me seriously!!" dramatic course correction after the catastrophe of ARTPOP and I have no shame admitting that it's everything I never wanted to see Gaga do, it shat on everything she stood for before and I felt betrayed as a fan, and she's not very good at that kind of music anyway. Gaga is the quintessential postmodern pop star, her special talent is to inhabit the artifice, which is why the A Star is Born soundtrack, while ostensibly similar in genre, is so much better because she was playing a character. She sounds more believable singing music for a fake pop star, just like she sounded more believable making music about being a pop star during the Fame/Fame Monster era. When she wants to make personal music, she is best when she surrounds it by bombast and pretense like in Born This Way and Chromatica, each half personal narrative and half cyborgian fantasy. Gaga doesn't do 'the real unvarnished me, warts and all!' well. Most of Joanne sucks, sorry not sorry. "Perfect Illusion" is a Tame Impala song ruined by a ridiculous vocal. "Million Reasons" is plodding and laborious. "John Wayne", "A-Yo" and "Diamond Heart" do a lot of screaming and not a lot of great hooks. Except for the title track, the one moment where her pop songwriting gifts perfectly marry the personal subject matter she is trying to put forward and you actually buy Gaga the folk singer. She figured it out with that one. "Grigio Girls" is also solid. "Sinner's Prayer" is great, but that's a Father John Misty cover.

I think of this was what was released it would’ve been much more well received.

A course correction was desperately needed after ARTPOP whether you want to admit it or not.

I'm not the biggest Sinner's Prayer, Angel Down, Joanne fan but yeah, it would have worked much better like this

And while I've mostly left this album in the past, I have to admit that it was necessary to get us where we are now

I called ARTPOP a catastrophe so yes I agree, although it was needed after Born This Way tbh

I just wish she hadn't gone that route in particular

Oh well it probably convinced Bradley to give her ASIB so it all works out

RE the Joanne hate it feels like it just comes from the fact fans wanted the redone album. I dont feel connected to Gaga or related to her when i listen to government hooker or engima, for example.

Not only did Gaga need the afore mentioned rebrand, the pop landscape was HORRIBLE for females in 2016/17. Like it or not, Gaga is a pop star and is hell bent on getting that EGOT, staying around for a long time. She will do want needs to be done.

Sinners Prayer, Million Reasons, Just Another Day are higher than Chromatica's highs other than SC/ROM

One of the main criticisms of Gaga was that she was a manufactured popstar with no talent and relied on shock and auto tune. Joanne essentially demolished that narrative for better or worse, and it gave us a top 5 hit with Million Reasons, which opened the door for Shallow. I think the album will get a fairer assessment in the future tbh, when the initial shock wears off.

I don't remember that being the narrative at all.....? As far as I remember the main criticism was that she relied on gimmicks and wasn't original enough, but not that she lacked talent.

The real tea is that Joanne is flawed, just like ALL of her other albums.

The narrative that it's somehow inauthentic is bogus AF when you consider that with every album, she's trying on a new musical aesthetic and style like it's just another costume. How can you be a fan in 2022 and still not get that? :biblio:

Just say you're only interested in BPM'd music and go.

Yeah. Joanne came at the end of 2016, during the Trump election, and female pop was a WASTELAND. 1989 was a few years old. Gaga and Katy were on hiatus since 2013 and it was all nameless popstars basically with Ari being big, but not massive. Honestly looking at Witness, I think it was a really smart move to pivot during the time period.

It's not inauthentic, my point is that she makes bad music when she only tries to be "authentic" in the way in which authenticity has been traditionally presented, the stark singer songwriter

Nope. It was a HUGE talking point about her for literal years with the casual gp who weren’t super into pop culture. Adele’s rise was in some ways a backlash to Gaga, and the whole “real music vs. pop” was a big thing.
