wcbf grew over the week and yes and had a million versions. both were also released on a friday. i wouldn't get my hopes up until later this week. a top 20 would be good enough

By now, it should be pretty clear that Disease was almost a last-minute release. They waited until Halloween was basically over to push it as a "Halloween anthem," the video was shot just weeks before release and wasn't even fully ready when the song dropped, plus there were no physical copies, no merch, and barely any promo or era-building.

 

She promised a single in October, and Disease ended up being the sacrificial lamb to kick off the MAYHEM rollout. No matter what song she released then, it was bound to underperform.

 

 

I believe Abracadabra was originally meant to be the lead single. Just 10 days after Disease dropped, she already knew Abracadabra would be next (confirmed in the Elle interview).

 

The video was planned months in advance, the sponsorship with Mastercard, etc—clearly a more strategic release.

 

Disease didn't underperform because of its quality—it's a great song and a strong album opener. It just wasn't treated like a lead single. There's no need to drag it down to praise Abracadabra, but there's no denying that Abracadabra has revived this fandom in a way we haven't seen since 2011… and that's just crazy.

Applause is definitely coming back at the They/them ball. 

Die With A Smile seems to have moved up +1 to #3 on AM UK, but hard to confirm because every time I refresh it keeps jumping between #3 and #4.

My best friend who hasn't been a fan of Gaga since TFM just confessed to me that he loves Abra and that he listens to it constantly

I honestly feel like this is all Todd Phillips' fault. They waited to see how Joker would perform and what the narrative around it would be before making a move. Rather than risking a more energetic song getting dragged down while the FaD mess was at its peak, they held back.

 

 

If FaD had been a success and the Venice narrative had been positive, I could totally see them pushing Abracadabra from the start and building momentum from there. But instead, she wisely (even though it was painful for us fans) stepped back and let the FaD disaster fade away first.

since we've already had #1 hit this era

 

I don't mind 2 more singles even though they won't do great on charts.

It's the pitch bending, the aggressive industrial beat after a fluttery pop chorus and it's the same melody. Oh wow, I'm shook that my fellow monsters are so aggressively mad about this comparison. Must mean it's accurate!

The cover fits DWAS more than Disease or Abra.
