I believe Abracadabra was originally meant to be the lead single. Just 10 days after Disease dropped, she already knew Abracadabra would be next (confirmed in the Elle interview).

 

The video was planned months in advance, the sponsorship with Mastercard, etc—clearly a more strategic release.

 

Disease didn't underperform because of its quality—it's a great song and a strong album opener. It just wasn't treated like a lead single. There's no need to drag it down to praise Abracadabra, but there's no denying that Abracadabra has revived this fandom in a way we haven't seen since 2011… and that's just crazy.

 

 

I've been thinking this is the case for a while now. Abracadabra being a much much bigger earworm than Disease is definitely interesting. 

I also went through her Disease announcement/release on instagram and it was filled with hate from the joker incels. She waited it out, came back with the perfect response to the backlash, and launched her best single since Bad Romance along a sickening Grammy appearance and win. We need to give the 10s when 10s are due. It was an amazing launch.

As much as I loved Disease, especially the last 40 seconds or so (a career highlight) I've always thought the "it's top 5 in her discog" discourse was a bit overblown. But Abracadabra? Yeah it's top 5 in her discography.

The problem is that Disease video was released a couple of days after the song. For most people their first listen of Abracadabra was with the video.

Cause the mv will be competing with the Spotify streams. Disease didn't have a video on the first day of the release

Lets be real, Disease is not in her top 20. On BTW alone you have at least 7 better songs - Judas, GH, HML, ScheiBe, TEOG, Bloody Mary, MTN.
