RENAISSANCE will probably age better than Lemonade as far as recurrent streams and plays. It's set to have actual hits which helps.

 

Both very different albums though, great of course, but different.

Cozy is actually one of my favorite Beyoncé songs lyrically. I absolutely love the sentiment behind it, plus it slaps.

One thing I'd love for Beyoncé to do is give us a stripped down performance of the album. Something on YT, minimalist, but it helps bring non fans into the era as well.

 

I could see the performance trending on Twitter and definitely helping to drive up the sales of RENAISSANCE.

 

I'm afraid that after the videos and/or streaming special, the era will be done outside of the tour.

I'm starting to think Bad Bunny may actually win AOTY. 

 

With REN being out of the top 10 and no visuals, the votes will go against her.

The Lemonade slander 

 

One of the most common takes from Hive that I get so confused by is "Lemonade isn't easily listenable to, you can't plat it whenever". I vehemently disagree. It is so effortlessly playable front to back. I mean the run of Hold Up-Daddy Lessons is legit 5 pure bops back to back  The only "hard to play" part is Sandcastles-Freedom, but I hardly find that worse than other portions in her discog...

 

In my opinion, ST is her least easily playable (besides IASF being pure trash and DIL filler outside the singles)   Amazing album, but just so long. Nearly half of the songs are above 5 minutes, and I kinda find the pacing of the album to be weird.

 

Lemonade, 4, The Gift are def the albums I find myself playing the most on a whim.

What does being in the billboard top 10 have to do with A grammy win? The man who won last year had no ounce of commercial success.

We know the standards are different for certain artists. 

I think Upgrade You might be a perfect song.

ITG, Energy, Cozy, Heated and AHAP are the best lyrical performances on the album. 

I find Rennie to be one of her most interesting projects lyrically tbh. There is a cohesiveness in the lyrics from each song such as the repeated theme of comparing her body to diamonds and pearls, space/starships, the pride flag’s colors, and the comparison of her body as a drug. It was posted a while ago here but the lyrics are very similar to a few prince songs which I think is cool. Lots of lyrical highlights in this album, I’d say Thique and AUIYM are the only weak ones.

Its a good album but I have to be in a certain mood.

The Gift is honestly in her Top 3 for me now. It's just a perfectly put together album from start to finish and songs like Water, Bigger and FYWB definitely need to be on the setlist for the RENAISSANCE tour.

 

I still wish she would drop the official videos for Ja Ara E and FYWB on YT. Those videos are absolutely stunning and I'll never forget catching them on Disney+ high as hell that day

 

If rumors were true that she was looking to book stadiums some time in 2020, I'm extremely curious to know what the set life would've been post Lemonade but pre-RENAISSANCE. 

 

I still think the tour may be coming in 2024 though.

There's a similar concept nowadays called NPR Tiny Desk. Artists usually do them around Grammy voting as a form of campaign, so two birds one stone.

Can we talk about how everyone is still mad over losing to Beck but the real shock was losing to Pharrell in Urban. That just showed he won only because of Happy and voters don’t listen to the full album. That album has 1.4 billion streams and 413k daily. 1.1 billion of those streams are from Happy. Like come on  that album had no impact at all. 
 

Does anyone actually believe that was deserved. 

Me, who never thinks about Grammys and never thinks about lyrics

 

I listened to lemonade again today for the first time in a while and it’s truly a timeless classic. Not one song has aged for me. 

 

I really think she would have won AOTY in 2017 had Adele not been in the same category. The Grammy voters loved Adele during that time (I say loved because we are yet to see if that love is still as strong which I doubt) and no one in the history of music was ever going to win against her. Name an artist and they would have lost to Adele. She was and has been untouchable at the Grammys her entire career so far because she catered to such a wide demographic of people. Like it or not, Bey’s music doesn’t have that same level of appeal, and that arguably applies to Renaissance more than any other album she’s released. That has nothing to do with the quality of the music but just personal preferences.

Lowkey, Lemonade gave exactly what was needed at the time for her as an artist, brand, and a socially conscious being. It was a MOMENT. But IMO, it's the album and visual I come back to least. 

 

It's literally the "least" Beyonce anything she's dropped. Musically or visually (there's next to no choreo). But probably is the most personal lyrically. So, to a degree, I get its appeal. It needed to happen. History will look back kindly on her for it and she ascended to new heights critically with the era overall. However, for the reasons mentioned, it just doesn't feel like it can be considered in any way definitive of the Beyonce "thing".

Lemonade is her most eclectic album. It's diverse yet so cohesive thanks to its lyricism.

It also houses some of her most interesting songs ever recorded in terms of musicality (Don't Hurt Yourself, Formation and Daddy Lessons), not to mention the stunning and breath-taking film which is a straight-out masterpiece. However, Lemonade is vocally her least impressive project (ahem Sandcastles), and I notice that I rarely played it apart from those three songs mentioned beforehand. 

 

It's the least "Beyoncé" album off her discography. Nevertheless, it deserved AOTY just like Renaissance, which is factually AOTY-worthy this year.

the pharrell win was not really a huge shock tbh

 

Pharrell won based off relationship more than anything...he's produced hits for like 90% of the R&B/Hip Hop/Pop industry since the mid-90s

 

i'm sure if Beyonce hadn't voted for herself...her vote would've went to Pharrell also...someone she's worked with on & off for 20 years
