Beautiful was really the last time she was forced to release a restrained vocal but she absolutely didn't want to. Then she did that horrific Grammys performance with the awkward acapella bit and choir and since then she never sang normally again.

Indeed. If a record label trusted and believed in an artist enough to let them produce their own work successfully, they'd not waste resources and money on hiring producers and songwriters. I don't know much about the production dynamics on her albums but I assume ArtPop through to Chromatica were all records she had a lot of control over, because they're all fairly middling records that don't have superstar shine like her first three. I've not heard Mayhem so I can't speak to it.

The Chromatica vs CII discussion is weird because I very vividly remember everyone joking that GaGa was finally cloning COADF when she dropped Chromatica lol. And Babylon absolutely did not help her cause.

I love how all these washed up flop bands and artists that had their heyday during the Reagan administration crawl out of the woodwork 30-40 years later to apologise to the "stupid girly music" artists they consistently insulted and bullied because those artists are still beloved and relevant and all their fans dgaf about them and their 50th flop album. And they're all stupid for saying Britney, Spice Girls, etc were "manufactured" because they were ALL on major record labels and had to submit their music to label execs to be approved and moulded into a marketable commercial album, or they were either handed songs to make or told what to make otherwise their budget would be cut.

I was miserable around this era so I can't listen to those songs
