NPR

LAGOS, Nigeria — The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly backed a resolution aimed at changing the way Africa and other regions are represented on world maps.

The "Correct the Map" resolution, introduced by the West African country of Togo on behalf of the African Group (the 54 African member states at the U.N.) and supported by the African Union, was adopted on Friday by a vote of 164 to one, with six countries abstaining.

The United States was the only country to vote against it.

Do we have the list for 6 other countries that abstained?

I'm guessing UK, Russia, China, Australia?

It was actually flop countries:

The six countries that abstained were Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine. The United States cast the sole vote against the resolution.

Serving TRUMP and his "Board of Peace" Members

Imagine abstaining or voting against correcting something like this deadbanana2

Oh no! Africa is just sooo BIG. Oh! That BIG African continent makes us look so small emofish I-Its just cold!

While I understand the movement for the new map, it's kind of messy to position this as "correcting" the map when it's just as "wrong" as the traditional Mercator projection is in a strictly technical sense - it just distorts things in a different way, shapes and angles instead of area. But I'm not delusional and don't believe that the US's opposition was for nuanced reasons. rip

Trump would probably only agree if they renamed something 'America' and he could show it himself with a sharpie

I feel like he's still obsessed with acquiring Greenland and doesn't want that to appear smaller (as it would in the corrected map). In the current maps, Greenland appears to be almost the same size as Africa, and we all know that the Not-So-Great Trumpkin is better with pictures than he is words and numbers… or facts.

I was flabbergasted for a second rip

Since life is mostly about shallow manufactured rage wars, I vote that democrats should try to get this map in every American school. You'd definitely get at least 10 years of mileage in the media cycle

I love this one too. As a Canadian this is the one that made me very afraid of USA, Russia, oil, and climate change.

Shaking in my boots. Canada and Greenland need to wake up a bit. They cant afford to be playing geopolitics like it was still an older era

It's still the biggest island of the world.

Just realised this is basically what's on the flag of the UN

So they replaced one flawed map with another flawed map. Not really sure why everyone is clapping over this like trained seals

It's bigger than Australia?

And aren't South America and Africa technically islands? eli

The US (state)'s addiction to individualism and exceptionalism continues
