Becky G What Went Wrong?

Featured Replies

Becky G has one of the most successful crossovers from a North American artist into Latin America that I've seen. She also has a huge number of streams
But in the last few years she has lost a lot of ground to Karol G and Rosalía. Why do you think Becky G has lost so much spotlight? gaycat3

Personally, even as a Southamerican Latino, I'm not really into her reggaeton or corridos songs.
They don't interest me that much. I think they're good-hot-above average, but reggaeton can start to feel repetitive when you been through it like for 3 decades, and a lot of corridos music can be hard to fully appreciate if you're not Mexican or deeply connected to that culture. . gayalipacat3

But I loved her electropop songs in English. I always wished she would release a full electropop or r&b album.
I play those early songs from her all the time and as a latino i feel represented by her. I think she's sweet

What do you think about Becky G? Do you think she has a chance to make a comeback? one day?
Would you be here for an English record from her?
She's one of the only american latinas in the american music landscape.
Theyre rare even if latinos are a huge demography in the states

People got annoyed with her co-opting a Dominican accent when she's Mexican.

Being tied to Dr. Luke as his next protege right when Kesha came forward with the lawsuit messed her career up stateside. Things got messy behind the scenes and she was fortunately able to start doing

Idk but she served us a mega bop with Arranca but GP showed lack of taste.

As far as in the USA, she just wasnt interesting enough. Shower, while very catchy & anthemic, was faceless in sound and lacked proper promotion to have her name be associated with it. In short, the song was bigger than her. So i feel like it didnt shoot her into superstardom like pop fans expected. Its a cute song for a throwback, as is Cant Stop Dancin' but I tuned out after those (super Hilary Duff coded I wish she woulda gotten both those songs insteadsnowman)

Karol G basically stole her name tbh

There's only room for one G girl in a market as sexist as LATAM reggaeton

Dr puke really gave her some fun songs. Im totally sure so many of these early songs from her belonged to katy, kesha and more
Break a Sweat was intended for Demi lovato but she feuded with dr puke. Shower was a katy song.

I think is really hard for latinos to take off with dance or rock records
USA want us to play the cliche bad bunny, camila or karol g game of latinos de barrio caliente familia thing or your just dropped
Shakira tried to do something different and now she's doin the predictable cause is the only thing workin for her anglo wise

Becky. Her competition at the time was Katy Perry,Kesha,Rihanna,Lady Gaga,Nicki,Adele,Lana
Definitely is the worst time to debut........

She kept jumping genres and she's no Rihanna, sorry girl. Becky is cute and talented so I wish her the best! I really hope Karol brings her out during Tropicoachella

she moved to regional mexican music which is not as popular in other countries. and 2 issues with english output- Luke blocked her and stalled her career, and her english attempts were mostly bad or not hit material. 'Zooted' for example is a horrible song. i love her and am excited for the full Luke album to leak.

Being tied to Dr. Luke as his next protege right when Kesha came forward with the lawsuit messed her career up stateside. Things got messy behind the scenes and she was fortunately able to start doing music in Spanish through a loophole in her contract without Luke's involvement.

With that said, I don't think her management team and record label did a great job of handling her career in LatAm during her peak. She never really became a touring act in either the US or LatAm, which we've seen can really hurt you in the long run with sustaining a fanbase.

Thank you all for the comments. Becky deserves more love gaycat4
I forgot Dr Puke was stealing her royalties too and she sued him for the branded water thing

That man looked so innocent-nice but was so evil. Miley, Demi, Pink—everyone hated him for a reason. I feel bad for her. She's probably stuck in that contract too and unable to releas english records or something. Bonnie McKee said one time that Dr. Luke's contracts are like signing with the devil. Kesha is honestly very lucky to be free today.

I'm rooting for Becky g to be big in Latin America again.
We need more female artist domination. We need new latino talent in both the states and lat. (Support addison rae and taylor swift eli)
Becky Is also Mexican. Love to my mexican sisterss. The best representation for them heart

God, you can sacrifice the music careers of Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Beéle,Camilo,Residente,Rauw Alejandro, and Peso Pluma and give that fame to Becky G, Aitana, Lali, Shakira and Rosalía. We pray for an energy exchange. 🙏 listen our evil demonic prayers

She fell off alright but I was at my Dominican barber shop and Mayores came on. It was a kii watching all the straights bop to her music.

She definitely released a few timeless bops.

these 2 songs are super underrated and possibly her best btw. even her own fans don't acknowledge these but i have always loved them!! major bangers.

Here in Colombia, when I go downtown, walk around my neighborhood, in the cars, or go into local shops, it's all Karol G, Bad Bunny, and Shakira. I honestly feel like they have such a strong monopoly over the Latin market right now. gaycat3

Shakira has been a staple since the '90s, of course. She's kind of the core of Latin America, like Taylor is in the States. But I'm always shocked by how big Karol G and Bad Bunny have become in the last few years. They're definitely the representation of Gen Z here.dancehall

I lowkey miss the early 2010s because it was more common to hear the Anglo pop girls outside. Now it's getting harder. The local scenes are stronger. Dua Lipa with "Future Nostalgia" and Miley with "Flowers" are some of the few I've heard playing outside with regularity in my country

But yeah, reggaeton is honestly far bigger with Gen Z than with millennials.
Probably because Gen Z grew up in a world where reggaeton was already huge. So is like their default genre*
We millennials experienced Latin America before the reggaeton boom, when radio was more about ballads, pop rock, R&B, and tropical music. Less popular with us

That corridoss mexican music thing was gettin popular here in the 2023-2024 but for some reason i dont hear it anymore
I wonder if the bad association with narcos ruined the reputation of the genre giraffe is that genre a thing in latino spaces in the states?
As yll know like 50% of the latino population in the states is mexican

I like thiss one influenced by tropical house. I miss dancehall and all that tropical thing gayalipacat2

she signed to dr luke around the time Doja signed to him. if not before Doja. hes the reason why. i think she moved on to full spanish albums after having to deal with his mess

Idk but she's hot and not in a fake plastic surgery way so Beckynator for LYFEEEEE yeah u light me up inside like the fourth of july

Nothing went wrong? Girl from zero, no nepotism, no family money, to having a deluxe plush jet setting lifestyle and can provide for her whole family, rich hot husband, fashion diva, fans around the world. She's the American Dream. And chart-wise she had a pretty decent hit in English and then at least four smash hits in Spanish. That's way better than most artists ever get, even major label ones. Especially considering she switched genres and languages halfway through.
